Moby Dick, from 1956, with Gregory Peck as Captain Ahab and Richard Basehart as Ishmael, directed by John Huston.

Great score by Phillip Sainton!

And, although I forget the actor's name, the chap who played Queequeg plays one of the hermits in Charles Beaumont's "Howling Man" in the second season of Twilight Zone

How you could forget a name like Friedrich Anton Maria Hubertus Bonifacius Graf von Ledebur-Wicheln?

His on-screen name was Frederick von Ledebur.  He started out in life as a teenage officer in the Austro-Hungarian Army during WWI.

The part of Father Mapple was played by Orson Welles in the 1956 film.  When Moby Dick was turned into a TV miniseries in 1998, none other than Gregory Peck performed the role.

Fact is, I'd even forgotten the relatively compact name mentioned in the commentary on the Twilight Zone episode.

TD: The Dark Crystal, with commentary by conceptual designer Brian Froud. Though this was a fact I googled on my own (I personally use "ask Alexa" as a subset of "google," which may or may not be strictly technologically accurate, but I'll accept that margin of error) I didn't realize Jim Henson died so young (53.)

Karl Urban is the perfect Dredd, and Olivia Thirlby, from Juno, is a perfect counterpart. Classic dovetailing and bookending, and a super sweet end. Lena Headey, as the primary antagonist, is also excellent. Amazing soundtrack as well.

High recommend - this is the kind of film you rewatch. 8)

I really like that one. Seen it maybe four times now.

Love Lena Hendey (Cercei from Game Of Thrones) as the villain.

Schreiber is fun to watch in whatever he is in, and even his voiceover work is above average.  I watched this shortly after it came out, but not since.  Maybe after a twenty-year hiatus I could throw back a couple and watch a Clancy flick.  (That's the best way to do so.)

Is this a re-make then? I rather like the remake of The Manchurian Candidate with Schreiber (although there's a bit of a stretch to keep the adjective "Manchurian" relevant.) I wanted to like the remake of The Omen, but the "remake" was almost just a literal re-shoot of the script of the original, so while I liked Schreiber all right, I just couldn't see that there's any point to the project.

Jack Ryan has been played by many actors.  I think Alec Baldwin did him best.  He is a CIA analyst, not an action hero.

One of Frederick von Ledebur's last roles was in Sorcerer, William Friedkin's adventure movie set in South America with Roy Scheider, another all-around fave!

Quote from: hopefullytrusting on December 10, 2023, 06:22:07 PMKarl Urban is the perfect Dredd...

Karl Urban does an excellent job as a young Woodrow Call (the Tommy Lee Jones character in Lonesome Dove) in the prequel Comanche Moon.

Even better, however, is the incredible Steve Zahn, who will make you believe that he possesses Robert Duvall's soul for his portrayal of Augustus McCrae.

Another favorite recently:

Charlton Heston as General "Chinese" Gordon, and Laurence Olivier as The Mahdi.

An excellent traversal of the politics of colonialism in the British government in the late 1800's, as well as the siege of Khartoum: a sigh of resignation and doom hangs over the movie.

But isn't that the whole point of the toy line.

I find the idea of using "Barbie" to deliver a message like the above to be kinda of hypocritical. It's a toy line designed specifically to glamorize fashion and beauty, and make massive profits out of exploiting both.

The "message" Mattel wants to impart young girls seems to revolve around consuming products. Buy clothes, buy make up. Ken drives a Ferrari and Barbie has a multi million dollar mansion and that's apparently the "ideal". Just sheer consumerism and materialism.

I thought this movie was pretty solid though it had some flaws.

I then rewatched the one with Stallone and the 2012 version just felt like Citizen Kane by comparison.

Daniel Benzali is fantastic in his role, and I am convinced I've seen him before, but I can't place him - he has one of those faces and beady eyes.

He was a recurring presence in several popular T.V. shows like N.Y.P.D. Blue and Murder One

It is not hypocritical, it is the point of the movie.  Barbie has to learn that her world doesn't reflect the real world in the least, and Barbie needs to be more than an image of consumerism to inspire girls.

It helps if you watch it before talking about it.

Quote from: Karl Henning on November 13, 2023, 06:02:17 AMLast night, again: Star Trek: First Contact. I don't remember the degree to which I realized this at first, but it almost plays more like a TNG episode than like "a Star Trek feature," and that's fine. A matter of its being directed by Jno. Frakes?

All of the TNG movies feel like extended episodes of the show (except maybe for the last one).

Contact is probably the best out of the bunch but i still disliked how they turned around certain aspects of the show. I didn't like the Borg queen (kinda goes against the whole idea of the Borg) and i didn't like Picard acting so out of character.

They aren't unfun to watch but i consider them inferior to the show itself. Seeing Picard scream and play the action hero doesn't even remotely approach the power he projected in scenes like this:

LKB

Not precisely OT l suppose, but Godzilla Minus One in about 30 minutes. I'm happy to be in the theater, especially for a $7.00 ticket.  8)
