As long as I this release pulled up, I listened to the companion piece, the Sinfonietta No 1.



I was surprised, it is not very symphonic. Made an impression being more of a colorfully orchestrated rhapsody, making use of the characteristic jewish scale. An enjoyable listen. I've listened to this disc before, I'm sure, but retained no memory of it.

The 7th is the most impenetrable Mahler symphony for me. I am giving it another try.

Seven string quartets by Paul Dessau, four of which are pretty short, yet significantly substantial to some extent. Some present ideas by Berg and/or Schoenberg (Nos. 3, 4, 6 and 7), the other three being more tonal. The 1st SQ reminded me a bit of Hindemith and Toch and it was my favorite followed by the concise 5th SQ where its language softens with respect to the two previous ones and the two next ones. Very interesting overall. Worthwhile music.
