I'm sure you all knew this, but it's news to me: the Koechlin piano quintet is a towering masterpiece.

The No.3 is great but I always enjoyed Previn's No.4 more than received wisdom would say I should.....!

I'm again going to cheat and say where I am rather than what I'm listening to. Though while here I've heard various snatches of organ music put on for tourist and school groups...

I'm in Barcelona. I've just stepped outside of the Palau de la Música Catalana. And I'm shaking a little, because I think the concert hall must be one of the most beautiful rooms on the planet.

Between that and the interior of Sagrada Familia, Barcelona has an unfair portion of humanity's greatest interiors.

I knew Barcelona when it was as rough as a badger's arse, a few years after the fall of Franco. I preferred it then actually. Fond memories of Plaça Reial and an apartment I had for peanuts on Calle de Sant Pau.

That was Wednesday. And yes it's stunning. Somehow the Palau affected me differently.

Of course it could be that the organ helped and I'm seriously tired this afternoon, but I think I would have responded without those things. I'd seen a couple of photos and thought "oh, I really want to see that". And... it's just magic.

Bloody hell Spain has some sights. Day 31 of the trip, only another 46 to go...

PS I also went to the Sant Pau hospital today, the main hall there's pretty bloody good though not on that OMG level that 1 city shouldn't have 2 of. And Park Guell this morning, which was nice but would be better in a universe where Instagram was never invented.

You mean the death of Franco, right? He never fell (from power, that is).

Bach, JS - Sonatas Violin & KB - coming near the end of my Papa Bach perusal of my collection with these works below - all on Baroque violin and harpsichord - are there any MI versions and/or transcriptions?  Just curious - quite happy with these performances (reviews attached for the interested - one no longer present) - since there are numerous historic and recent recordings abounding, I'm sure others' will comment on their favorites.  Dave :)

There was a period in the early 1980s when Fascism had gone and Spain seemed to swing completely the other way -- really liberal. Barcelona was dangerous, but for me, at the age I was, it was so exciting. Full of "interesting" people . . . . opportunities for all sorts of adventures . . . .

I didn't know that Previn's RVW 4 was controversial!  My favorite is Boult but Previn is just underneath it.  It is a great performance.  I just think that he really, really sparkled in the 3rd and 5th.

First listen to this recent purchase:

I've known Déodat de Séverac's piano music for decades, but had never listened to his mélodies. They're turning out to be delicious, and beautifully performed by François Le Roux and Graham Johnson.

Indeed, that's extraordinary. I see one of the Barcelona guides describes it as like being inside a giant Faberge Egg, which certainly captures something of its opulence ..  8)
