I just saw him in, what was, a great Season 3 of Torchwood. A strong enough actor for me never to think of Doctor Who when he is on the screen.

I'm 2/3rds of the way through the Millenium trilogy, the Swedish series with Noomi Rapace and Michael Nyqvist. I thought I might have watched the US film but I see now I never did. It was this version of Dragon Tatoo that I saw way back when the world was young (those were the days!).

I'm finally taking Mission:Impossible back up (I'm mid-second season.) Could conceivably binge-watch it, but I'll keep to two shows per diem.

One of my coworkers' 13-year-old son is watching Mad Men, on the condition that he come ask her questions whenever he wants to understand something that happens. She said when he first came to her and said, "I have a question," it was: "How much alcohol do you drink at work, Mom?" She laughed and answered, "We don't. Our office isn't like that." He retorted, "That's a very Mad Men answer!"

I told her not to let him watch the lawn mower episode or he won't be willing to do chores when he's older.

Torchwood: Seasons 3 & 4 (2009-2011)
John Barrowman, Eve Myles
Bill Pullman, John De Lancie

Finished off these last two seasons, wildly different from the first two.

While Season 3 gleefully showed the inner-workings of government in crisis, notably taken on by Peter Capaldi, Season 4 made the government mere background to its global crisis. The latter also has a curious lack of aliens, which seems odd for a Doctor Who spinoff.

Good-guy actor Bill Pullman is immensely creepy here! It is something he does with his mouth; his teeth are always slightly parted with his tongue right at the back of the small space, always visible to the audience.

"The Town" is a fun change-up for Mission: Impossible. No self-destructing tape. Jim is kidnapped. Barely emerging from sedation he communicates by blinking in Morse code.

Have you seen this series Karl? I thought it was excellent. Gritty, emotional, powerful stuff.

My pleasure. Having moved from the Boston area in 1992 after growing up there, this show brings me back. Great performances, all around.

The Outlaws Series 3

A while ago I tried watching the first series of this, but although fine/amusing, and full of the silliness that Stephen Merchant is so good at, I didn't feel motivated to stick with it beyond Episode 1.
But when this third series appeared on the iPlayer I decided to give it another whirl, and found the first episode so utterly hilarious, I dived in. Ensuing episodes, though still funny at times, never rose to the level of the first, but the characters are so affectionately painted, and the story's fun and snappily filmed, with a clever grifting of a grifter at the end, that it's all very enjoyable.

Yes, Willie Garson was a delight every time he appeared!  He died 3 years ago, unfortunately, of pancreatic cancer.

The show has been gone for 10 years already!   :o   Hard to believe!   :o

Quote from: DavidW on May 30, 2024, 08:32:36 AMAnd here... Pete Capaldi is just too cold, pragmatic, rude etc to be anything like the other doctors.  I mean we've had some grumpy, short tempered, arrogant doctors before... but he takes the cake.  But the writing is on point.  Every episode (well okay there is one or two stupid ones) was just just so much better than it had been for years.

Oh since he learned that he is just an idiot with a box he became WAY BETTER.  In S9 he is now one of my favorite doctors.  And the episodes might be some of the finest I've ever seen... this might actually be the zenith of Doctor Who.  I'll have to decide when the season is over.

I only discovered it a few months ago, so it's new to me.  :)
