Quote from: Cato on June 15, 2024, 05:33:02 PMWatching Robert Taylor break a cross was quite a shock!  Peter Ustinov as Nero was, of course, fun to watch.

Quote from: Pohjolas Daughter on June 15, 2024, 03:00:18 PMNatasha Lyonne is a very good actress.  I ran across her after hearing (for some time) a lot of hype about "Orange is the New Black".  She's now also into directing and producing.  8)

She is great! I need to finally get around to Russian Dolls.

Quote from: Pohjolas Daughter on June 12, 2024, 02:56:25 PMI remember watching that in the theater with a female friend; we were grabbing each other's hands, holding our breaths, screaming out loud, and almost jumping into each other's laps!

PD

Blair Witch Project was like that back in 1999. Went to see it on the Monday night after opening weekend, with a bunch of people from work. Sold out show, and everybody in the crowd was super into it. People jumping and screaming and gasping. One of the best times I've had at the movies.

(Not as good as Avengers Endgame, but I can't imagine anything at the cinema will ever top the fun of that night  )

Rewatched Lord of War for the first time in fifteen or sixteen years or so.  Per the Gray Lady, Cage's character is at least partly inspired by Viktor Bout, whom the US government assessed to be of roughly equal political worth as Brittney Griner for prisoner exchange purposes.  The ending of this movie kind of puts that exchange in perspective.  It's roughly as I remembered it, well enough done, grim enough, and cynical enough.  The scene with brown-brown is as wacky now as when the film was released (I don't know if people actually snort the concoction), and the explanation of child soldier usage more or less seems to remain true, but perhaps it's way off.  The closing credits that point out that the biggest arms sellers at the time were the five permanent members of the Security Council highlight policy hypocrisy and the ridiculousness of the business under consideration.  Things have changed slightly in the intervening years, of course, with the US now firmly entrenched in the top spot by several country miles.  'Murica!

The Big Clock (1948) with cast below (plot at the link) - a suspense thriller in the film noir era - gradually becomes more engrossing until the climatic end. Ratings: 7.6/10, IMDB & 100% on Rotten Tomatoes from the critics. Recommended if a fan of the B&Ws from the period.  Dave

P.S. Elsa Lanchester plays an eccentric artist and 'steals' many scenes in which she appears.  :D

QuoteThe Big Clock is a 1948 American thriller directed by John Farrow and adapted by novelist-screenwriter Jonathan Latimer from the 1946 novel of the same title by Kenneth Fearing. The black-and-white film is set in New York City, and stars Ray Milland, Charles Laughton and Maureen O'Sullivan. Elsa Lanchester and Harry Morgan, in an early film role, also appear.(Source)

Working my way through the Bourne series.  Quite enjoyed the first two.  Had hoped to watch the third one last night, but it doesn't appear that they have it on Peacock tv--though they do have the fourth.  Strange.  It also looks like someone else stars in the fourth (instead of Matt Damon).

My mother (Japanese) loves the movie. But she loves Elvis Presley. Cinematography and camera works were excellent. I just got tired of some characters and dialogues.
