Generally I prefer live Kubelik recordings of Mahler (on Audite).

The piece; I haven't heard any other recordings.

Quote from: DavidW on July 08, 2024, 06:07:11 AMYou know that it is marked "largo" right?  It is supposed to be played slowly.  If you don't like the engineering, Maazel has re-recorded it for BR.  I recommend Immerseel instead to better balance instruments and keep the tempo up, light, and fresh.

Thread duty: Immerseel Schubert 2 of course! :)

The Schubert 2s I have heard are never that dull.
If you are interested in listening to orchestrations of solo/chamber music, you might be interested in this thread.

Mahler is Mahler always, but I believe 3d is not right piece to start with. 5th may work better for this.

Bautifully done I must say.

Perchance I am, though bound in wires and circuits fine,

Leroy Anderson
Alma Mater
Irish Suite
Scottish Suite
BBC CO - Leonard Slatkin

The meatiest offerings from these sets so far, although each movement from these concert suites are essentially Anderson orchestral miniatures.

You might want to give it several listens before making a decision.  Mahler is a tough nut to crack.  This symphony in particular is grand in scope possessing many moods.

Vanska M6 is fine... not Earth-shattering but finely played.  It is a good middle-of-the-road recording.

Giovanni Sgambati (1841–1914)
Symphony No. 1 op. 16 in D major.
Symphony No. 2 in E flat major.
Württembergische Philharmonie Reutlingen, Ola Rudner.

Worth the effort. These are fine Symphonies, well crafted. Good performance and ditto sound.

Perhaps better to listen first to Des Knaben Wunderhorn and than a relisten of the first symphony. :)
This song cicle is one of my favorites of Mahler

A very fine Bruckner 7th with conductor Stefan Geiger and the NDR Youth Symphony Orchestra, sounding more polished than many professional ensembles, and filmed in the fabulous Elbphilharmonie. (I don't even mind the applause between movements, presumably from proud, excited parents.)
