Some very interesting interpretive decisions. He recorded them in his house on a Bosendorfer piano. The sound is very close and clear, if a little dry but not claustrophobic.

I think he's a good musician, though I don't know that WTC1. I remember his Busoni Fantasia is one of the ones I liked - despite the sound.

It just came out today. I loved that Busoni/Liszt recording despite merely adequate sound. He was a great host for NPR's "From the Top," too.

There is a certain someone who would love the unusual solo tam-tam placed towards the opening of this Dies Irae.

Officially the second of Rossini's farse, it's best thought of as a one act semi-seria.

Villa-Lobos: Piano Concertos 1 and 2

The first concerto is a promising beginning despite it has some longueurs. However, the second concerto is the real thing on this listen. Here the writing gets more refined and notoriously inspired. Some parts reminded me of Malipiero. There must be elements of modal music I guess.

Now for something a bit different

Schönberg Erwartung
Krenek Symphonic Elegy
Schönberg Verklarte Nacht

So a Schönberg work I don't particularly care for (sorry, it just doesn't work for me) together with the one Schönberg work I really like, and in the middle a work (the Krenek) I've never heard before).

Erwartung is not everyone's money, and even for us who love it, the intensity isn't for every day.

Schoenberg's Erwartung is one of my favorites from him --- count me a huge fan of his so-called "free atonal" period. Have you heard the Jessye Norman/James Levine performance of Erwartung on Philips? I highly recommend it. As often the case with me and Arnie, the eerie atmosphere of so much of his music just wins me over. Such a remarkable work. I still like Verklärte Nacht, but I seldom play it these days. I've actually played Pelleas und Melisande more than Verklärte Nacht.

Listened yesterday. I liked the sound and simple mood.

PS My impression now hasn't changed much from my initial response to this recording, many years ago: the repertoire sounds lovely but is in general musically just not that interesting...
