Quote from: Irons on July 16, 2024, 07:49:02 AMI wondered when Parry would join the conversation. I always think of Stanford and Parry in the same breath.

Yep me too as a matter of fact.

Symphonic Addict

Wellesz: Symphonies 1 and 2

Engrossing post-Mahlerian symphonies. BTW, this set is one of the best things CPO has ever made.

The current annihilation of a people on this planet (you know which one it is) is the most documented and at the same time the most preposterously denied.

Franck, Eduard - Orchestral Music, Piano Concertos, & Piano Trios on the recordings below - going to spend the day w/ this neglected German composer - reviews of the piano works attached for those interested.  Dave :)

Luigi Cherubini
Missa Solemnis in G Major
London PO & Chorus - Riccardo Muti

The occasion of a coronation for King Louis XVIII gives this Cherubini Mass a little extra oomph.

Recorded: 2000 at the Danish Radio Concert Hall, Copenhagen, Danmark.

Some great choices this evening, with this as the standout for me. Stanford and Parry ought to be appreciated far more, I think, but the Svendsen works are even better in my eyes.

Good to have you trailblaizing such great music 🏆👍☺️

Ries, Ferdinand (1784-1838) - Violin & Piano Sonatas w/ the performers below on 3 volumes covering about half of the 18 violin/piano sonatas written by Ries - friend, pupil, 'secretary', etc. of LVBeethoven.  Listened to Vols. 1 & 3 today as $4.50 USD DLs on sale from Prestomusic - burned to CD-R and sounded fine on my den speakers - Vol. 2 ordered from BRO for $4 and 'in the mail' - so for 13 bucks picked up all 3 recordings - don't have the reviews I perused but all quite good.  Dave :)

Symphonic Addict

Ginastera: Concierto Argentino and Piano Concerto No. 1

Quite different each other, where the former features folksy rhythms a la Estancia, and the latter immersed into some somber, chilly atmospheres with excellent use of the orchestra. Ginastera had a phenomenal talent for orchestration.
