Very different characters of course, but this time around Rhett Butler has me thinking of Don John's line in Much Ado About Nothing: "though I cannot be said to be a flattering honest man, it must not be denied but I am a plain-dealing villain."

Loved this "little" film.

"Donya works for a Chinese fortune cookie factory. Formerly a translator for the U.S. military, she struggles to put her life back in order. In a moment of sudden revelation, she decides to send out a special message in a cookie."

Fremont is an understated, gentle, yet sharply formulated story about human connection. Filmed in enchanting black and white with lots of warmth and a good dose of dry humor.

Rewatched 12 Monkeys for the first time in a good number of years.  It holds up very well.  The total lack of CGI refreshes, and the at times bizarre Gilliam visual style suits the story perfectly.  The main cast does fine work, Pitt especially, and the sight of a young, full-head-of-hair Christopher Meloni playing a cop (naturally) brought a chuckle not intended at the time.  And this film has one thing no other scifi film has, the breathtaking sight of Madeleine Stowe as a blond.  The best cinematic equivalent I have seen is when Monica Bellucci went red in Malèna.  It's been so long since I last watched this movie that I used a regular DVD (!), so next time around I will go higher res in some form.

The universe is change; life is opinion. - Marcus Aurelius, Meditations

People would rather believe than know - E.O. Wilson

Propaganda death ensemble - Tom Araya

12 Monkeys is an all-around fave!

Recently we watched...

McCabe and Mrs. Miller

Unfortunately, we do not have the Criterion Collection's restored version, and the soundtrack on our version was iffy.

Nevertheless, an unusual Western with Julie Christie in a quite different role from her previous movies!

And although it is the wrong season...

Oy!  Nearly 30 years old!  It was a monster hit!  Wonderful score by Randy Edelman.

Practically perfect comedy, only one or two scenes should have been dropped, otherwise, very funny!

Michael Rispoli is a stand-out, steals the scene every time he appears!

I probably won't list everything that I'm seeing at the Scandinavian Film Festival, but I just realised I hadn't even mentioned the highlight so far, a Danish film known in English as Sons.

Honestly, I'd watch Sidse Babett Knudsen (best known as the lead in the TV series Borgen) in just about anything because she delivers every time. In this film she's a prison guard who reacts very oddly to the arrival of a new prisoner. For a while you're trying to figure out just what is going on with her, because it's clear she's lying (and even once the audience does know, she still keeps lying to other characters). It's an excellent performance.

Yes, quite worth it!  Brad Pitt's performance reminds me of Chris Tucker's wild man in another movie with Bruce Willis, The Fifth Element.

Tonight we have watched a Western with Charlton Heston:

Just an excellent character study in loneliness, in morality, and in duty in the post-Civil War West.

The plot meanders like one of the mountain rivers, all sorts of interesting twists and turns.

Fantastic supporting cast:  Ben Johnson, Donald Pleasance, Bruce Dern, Anthony Zerbe, and Joan Hackett.

Written and directed by Tom Gries, who in the 1960's and 1970's created several movies concentrating on characters who find themselves in both everyday situations, and others not so everyday.

Hadn't heard of this remarkable film before finding it on a Best Documentaries list a few days ago.

Wikipedia:

"This documentary follows the 2013–2014 Maidan Uprising, in Kyiv, via a chronological approach to key events via historic footage and testimonies of two dozen protesters. The first events narrated are the expected EU-Ukraine trade agreement being promised as a way to elevate Ukraine's future, but this agreement is suddenly discarded in favor of one with Russia. Pro-Europe citizens organize protests and occupations, centered on and around Kyiv's Maidan Nezalezhnosti. After 4 months, the standoff between the government, its forces, and increasingly organized and dedicated protesters escalate into barricades, violent skirmishes, brutal repression, and deadly shootings by police on protesters. With the latest bloody and gruesome killings of protesters in February 2014, protest leaders vow to take down the government by force the following day. Ukraine's pro-Russia President Viktor Yanukovych flew to Russia in the early hours opening the way to new elections and a new Ukraine looking toward Europe."

I don't remember any specific lines from those movies, but I did enjoy them.   :)

Don't know whether or not you watched any of the Olympics, but Tom Cruise was there at some of the events.  He could be seen being very generous with his time with fans--chatting with them and taking selfies with them.  :)  Pretty cool that he did (from what I've heard) a lot of his own stunts--including flying!

Yes, but it has been outdone by climbing that hotel in Mumbai, dangling off a plane, the helicopter sequence...

Well, add to the list of Tom Cruise's stunts:  Dropping into the Stade de France via cable, riding off on a motorcycle and more.  This was during the last roughly half hour of the closing ceremonies of the Olympics.  I won't share more, but it was so much fun to watch and you could see how thrilled the athletes were to be there.  I'm sure that someone will post the official video online soon.

Very appropriate as the next Summer Olympics will be held (for the third time) in L.A.  :)

I'll have to go back and watch those movies again--I also believe that I've missed some of them.  Note:  I did post a youtube clip to the Olympics in the Olympics thread (edited a bit from what I can tell, but still fun to watch).
