Gustav Mahler
Symphony 10
Philadelphia - Ormandy

I've never bothered with Mahler's 'Tenth'. Figured I would start at the beginning.

Symphony, Opus 5.

A spectacular Symphony in SOTA sound. I am a great admirer of this composer. A work of strength, insight, and visionary.

I had a few beers before and after posting, so I guess you are right.

I am a big fan of 7th Symphony too. Odd and for me disappointing that such an accomplished symphonist chose to ignore writing for string quartet.
You must have a very good opinion of yourself to write a symphony - John Ireland.

I opened the door people rushed through and I was left holding the knob - Bo Diddley.

Yes, indeed. I hadn't noticed that!

Continuing on with the cycle for a bit. Why not!

Not a foot wrong. If Carlsberg wrote symphonies ...

Spotted Horses

A few days ago I listened to Beethoven's first piano sonata (a favorite of mine) in the Annie Fischer recording (which I have finally heard due to available on streaming). It was lovely.

I listened to two others, Claudio Arrau (Philips analog) and HJ Lim.

Arrau's elegant expressiveness is marvelous, but at times I wished for more rhythmic snap in the finale. HJ Lim's account is a bit audacious, and wonderful to listen to. I have it on disc, but I streamed it to send Ms Lim a few extra pennies.

Maybe I'll start a meander through some Beethoven sonatas, picking artists randomly.

Carlsberg wrote 54 Symphonies, that's a lot of Carlsberg ;D  ;D  ;D
When you listen to all of them every symphony is guaranteed beautiful!

Quote from: Mandryka on August 15, 2024, 11:15:23 PMPM me if you want the Frescobaldi - I don't think I've heard "On Early Music"

The Pedroni D960 is a bit iconoclastic too, less successful IMO. There's also a Goldberg Variations.
Will do. That was the only recording of Frescobaldi by Francesco Tristano Schlimé that I could find.

Symphonic Addict

Quote from: Madiel on August 15, 2024, 04:54:57 AMHa. Orpheus is the one I remember liking. Possibly because it's short...

The problem I have with Orpheus is that it's not particularly eventful, I find it boring to be honest. There are others that are also short and unfold slowly and have more interesting ideas.
The current annihilation of a people on this planet (you know which one it is) is the most documented and at the same time the most preposterously denied.

Symphonic Addict

Quote from: Madiel on August 15, 2024, 04:55:50 AMI would argue he could be the best ever in that regard.

And I would concur with that assessment. The only other composer who comes close is Tchaikovsky IMO. Most of works I've heard by him feature a memorable, striking melody.

Orchestral songs and choral music by Elliott Carter. Rosalind Rees (sop.), Gregg Smith Singers plus other choral and instrumental ensembles, all under the direction of Gregg Smith.

These are all early Carter pieces, spanning the period from the mid 1930s to the mid 1940s. Even in this style that was so different from his mature one, though, a strong a personal shines through, and the disc is pure delight! And the choice of poets (Frost, Crane, Dickinson, etc.) is superb...
