I love this! The balance of Bach with Brazil go this way and that, but it is always endearing.

Ciurlionis: String Quartet in C minor

How elegant and sprightly this late-Romantic quartet is. The slow movement struck me like pretty sophisticated and warm. This composer wrote some interesting music, including two colourful tone poems (In the Forest and The Sea).

Bach: Sonata No. 3 and Partita No. 3

Along with Biber's sonatas, for me, these works represent the summit of the violin repertoire.

The current annihilation of a people on this planet (you know which one it is) is the most documented and at the same time the most preposterously denied.

Eshpai: Symphony No. 6 'Liturgic'

His only choral symphony, and one that is imbued with Russian Orthodox solemnity. I think it works very well. It features one of his most haunting openings in his symphonies.

Pretty good. I've seen some criticism that the opera is a bit static, and I can understand that, but to be honest I find most opera tends towards being static. It's certainly unfortunate that battles happen off stage (though of one of them potentially could be onstage, this production basically cut to graphics for a scene change).

But whatever the dramatic shortcomings, the music held my interest pretty well. Each of the four acts is basically half an hour long, so it's in manageable chunks. It's probably something that works quite well on CD.

An opera with several good moments indeed. Not aware of official recordings apart from this one on Chandos:

There's also a more recent DVD version conducted by Schønwandt. Also a much older audio recording that's in English (immediately not to my taste). As far as I know that's the sum total.

I did find a review of the DVD that explicitly said it was better than the production you can see on YouTube. Probably not the kind of thing I can try on streaming though.

Thanks for the info. To acquire the DVD is the only way to find out then.

Raff: Piano Trio No. 1

Absolutely phenomenal. I didn't remember at all how solidly written and well-crafted this work is. Looking forward to listening to the other three.
