Quote from: ritter on October 18, 2024, 09:28:40 AMWell, not liking the idea of what Colom does (for the record, I don't give a hoot), or hating Bach on the harmonica, doesn't necessarily mean one is reactionary.

Claiming special knowledge of what composers did, when in fact no one knows, and claiming that should determine performance practice very much is reactionary.  Performing artists should just get on with what they want to do, free from suffocating preconditions.  The result may be crap, but it may not be.

Quote from: Todd on October 18, 2024, 10:05:04 AMWhy?

To truly understand a composer's work, we should avoid altering it arbitrarily. Otherwise, we may end up with new compositions that are not necessarily engaging. Works where any resemblance to the original may be accidental and possibly even unintentional.

Reality trumps our fantasy far beyond imagination.

More reactionary thinking, with presumption thrown in.

You suggest that my thinking is reactionary. May I inquire as to how you would characterize your own thinking? I'm curious.

You would have written that response no matter what I wrote.

It would have been surprising if you had written anything else.

Another one size fits all response.  That's fine.

We can be fairly sure Bach never played a harmonica or heard one played. We have no idea of whether he would have found the idea of playing his music on harmonica interesting or merely tolerable or not acceptable in any way.

OK, as these posts keep getting shorter and shorter and less and less illustrative, maybe it's time for us to move on to a new topic.

Wow. I can't believe (well, I guess I can...) that my Mozart post generated so much garbage. This meme applies to most of them and many on this site in general:

Quote from: JBS on October 18, 2024, 06:45:33 AMHere's Fur Elise. I wouldn't put it on heavy rotation, but I rather like it.

It's a heck of a lot better than the Richard Clayderman version I used to suffer through in my youth. Clayderman did it in 6/8 time instead of 3/4.
Every single post on the forum is unnecessary. Including the ones that are interesting or useful.

Gentlemen, please, that's quite enough!

Bach's gamba sonatas BWV 1027-29 with violoncello piccolo and fortepiano - curious combination?

Both instruments have been used for recordings of these works before, but as far as I recall not in combination.
