Just now: Ruby Sparks

A famous young novelist, struggling to repeat his success, ends up writing his dream girl. It's kind of a romantic comedy, but it also touches on some much darker ideas about men wanting women to be just how they imagined them to be.

It enhanced my appreciation at the end to discover that Zoe Kazan, who plays the girl, actually wrote the screenplay (inspired in part by the story of Pygmalion). And her real-life partner plays the novelist, but it's actually quite impressive how she wrote this so much from HIS perspective.

Is that your first time watching it Karl?  If so, what did you think of it?

Here:  Watched Heaven Can Wait.  Thoroughly enjoyed it.  I remember watching it years ago in the theater.   :)

Great fun. Williams was brilliant, of course. Loved the dynamic between Williams and Fields. Really no good reason I hadn't seen it before.

I watched the seven movies of the new Arrowfilms J-Horror Rising Blu-ray box set one movie each day:

SHIKOKU 死国 (Shunichi Nagasaki, 1999)
ISOLA: MULTIPLE PERSONALITY GIRL ISOLA 多重人格少女 (Toshiyuki Mizutani, 2000)
INUGAMI 狗神 (Masato Harada, 2001)
ST. JOHN'S WORT 弟切草 (Ten Shimoyama, 2001)
CARVED: THE SLIT-MOUTHED WOMAN 口裂け女 (Kōji Shiraishi, 2007)
PERSONA 仮面学園 (Takashi Komatsu, 2000)
NOROI: THE CURSE ノロイ (Kōji Shiraishi, 2005)

The movies in this box set are pretty varied in style incorporating horror elements in different  ways and in different amount. I liked Shikoku, Isola, Carved and Noroi the most while Inugami and Persona were my my least favourite.

Spatial distortion is a serious problem deteriorating headphone listening.
Crossfeeders reduce spatial distortion and make the sound more natural
and less tiresome in headphone listening.

Curiously, the second time I've watched this in South Carolina: Reign Over Me.

I watched this yesterday... not for the timid (gorefest!!)

Karl Henning

The Rahsaan Roland Kirk documentary, The Case of the Three-Sided Dream, again. Also: Glass Onion. Not at all a bad sequel, though a shade formulaic. Not quite at the level of the first, IMO.

I think this film is a prime example of protagonist-centered morality. The main character (with all due respect to wonderful Robin Williams) is a pathetic creep stalker who even purposefully almost kills the potential stepdad of his children who doesnt even come off as that bad of a guy.

Not my cup of tea, a few funny jokes notwithstanding

I rewatched Happy Go Lucky. I'm trying to introduce my brother to Mike Leigh. I think he should see Life Is Sweet and get the whole treatment.

I remember Life is Sweet as having one of the funniest scenes I've witnessed in a theater ( a musical instrument is involved ).

Also a very impressive bit of acting by Ms Horrocks.

That's the one where I fell in love with Sally Hawkins.

I did have my brother watch Leigh's titanic masterpiece The Short & Curlies, perhaps a mistake as it is highly esoteric for an American human person.

My friends took me out to a local movie house last night: Red One. I wouldn't have selected it, myself, but I enjoyed it better than I might have expected.

Earlier this year Secrets & Lies hit me right in the emotion department and I thought about it nonstop for practically a week.

That whole cast is practically a ne plus ultra one for a Mike Leigh film, which is a great one. But I do find some of those earlier ones almost unbearably sad to watch now, despite the humour and Leigh's compassion.

I watched Alien Romulus. The android was well played, but other than that the movie is terrible. It blatantly rips off EVERY single previous film at almost every opportunity. It is more like a fan film without a single bone of creativity.
