Quote from: Number Six on December 03, 2024, 09:43:31 AMPresumably this is orchestral pieces? I can't find it on Apple Music.

I'm happy enough with Solti, Szell, and Karajan collections of preludes, etc. But it would be nice to hear this one. I found something similar from him on Decca just now, so that's good.  ;D

This album is on Qobuz. If you're seriously interested in Wagner, you can't do without Knappertsbusch. If not that serious, Solti and Karajan will suffice.

Ouch, throwing the gauntlet!  :-[

I found it on Spotify. Obviously, he has a lot of recordings of the operas. But for the moment, I just wanted the orchestral stuff.

Disc 2: Moralia 29-47, Harmoniæ Morales 1-19.

Florestan

These days more than ever I need music to take me as far as possible from the real, contemporary world. Yes, pure escapism. This charming recording in superb sound fits the bill to a tee.

Quote from: Daverz on December 03, 2024, 03:01:31 PMWho knew that Karajan and the VPO had a great Planets in them.  And this was his first recording of it.  In fact, I'd say this is the kind of music that he excelled in more than the core Germanic repetoire.  (I'm thinking of his Prokofiev, Shostakovich, Tchaikovsky, Honegger, and Sibelius.)
So true, they recorded a terrific performance of The Planets, colourful and suggestive; the orchestral sonorities are vivid and beautifully changing, they greatly unfold the mutable textures of the piece. I think the recording Karajan made with the VPO is even better than the one he made with the BPO.
I certainly agree Karajan's style wonderfully fit Prokofiev, Shostakovich, Tchaikovsky, Honegger and Sibelius, but his German repertoire isn't less extraordinary in my opinion.

I still don't get why Jacques Duphly continues to be so under appreciated... Too theatrical?  ::) Anyway, if this superb 2CD selection from his four books of harpsichord music played by Christophe Rousset doesn't win you over, nothing will . 8) Like Jean-Patrice Brosse in his complete Duphly series (Pierre Vérany), Rousset plays a sumptuous sounding harpsichord by Christian Kroll.

I've seen enough recommendations for this new disc to try it rather than rolling my eyes at the silly cover/title.

I really love Golda Schultz' voice, but what makes this an interesting recital is how many of the tracks are group efforts - there are seven other credited singers taking a total of 15 other roles! The orchestra is mostly modern with period trumpet, horn, and fortepiano, which I like.

Bacewicz Piano Quintet No 1, Silesian Quartet, Switala

After listening to the Messages Quartet on DUX I listened to this version, which I find slightly less attractive because the piano sound is not as rich as in the DUX recording. However it remains clear that this is utterly brilliant music from Bacewicz.
Formerly Scarpia (Scarps), Baron Scarpia, Ghost of Baron Scarpia, Varner, Ratliff, Parsifal, perhaps others.
