This film series is so much fun!  I especially love the earnest though over the top villains.

Chris Hemsworth's comedic villain was the best part of the newest one.

I was very worried when they added him, and I was so glad to be proven wrong - he was awesome! 8)

Over the top? Ridiculous? Arnie? Collateral Damage!

I consider Newman my favourite actor, and yet,  despite this being a well-regarded film, I'd never seen it until now.

I went in with high expectations and it far exceeded them.

Do you remember the original Doom video game from the 1990's?  One of my favorite things about that game was the monster in-fighting, when one dummy tried to shoot you but instead hit the monster infront of him, they would get mad at each other and start fighting forgetting about you.  The over-the-top villains in the Mad Max series remind me of that.  Dumb, lots of in-fighting, like wasn't Chris Hemsworth also fighting Joe (or whatever his name was).  Pretty good fun.

David Lynch drew inspiration from the depths of his consciousness, which he accessed through the practice of Transcendental Meditation (TM). Today, I re-watched Mulholland Drive while meditating in line with the TM practice I followed decades ago. Why not? It turned out to be an intriguing experience: scattered attention, an absence of thoughts, no attempts to interpret or understand what was happening on the screen, and no focus on separate details. Two and a half hours flew by unnoticed.

Made the mistake of following this up with another Paul Newman movie from the same year: A New Kind of Love.

Absolutely horrible. This would be a mediocre Doris Day and Rock Hudson movie, but with someone as talented and beautiful as Newman (plus Woodward and Thelma Ritter), it's absolute waste.

I have just watched what for me was a bad movie: The Beekeeper.

In a nutshell, the movie is about how scammers wipe out the savings of a senior citizen.  She was so depressed by this she committed suicide.  And our intrepid hero, Jason Statham. exacted revenge.

For me, its redeeming feature is that it shows how these spammers operate and take advantage of seniors.

Il Boemo (The Bohemian) (2022) - bio documentary on Josef Mysliveček - short synopsis below; Amazon rental ($4 USD) with English subtitles (languages used are Italian, German, & Czech) - rather somber but atmospheric film; long at nearly 2 1/2 hrs; concentrates on his Italian opera career which earned him the Il Boemo title - we have a short thread HERE, for those interested - also is the recent book by Daniel Freeman (which I review early in the posts).  Dave

QuoteIl Boemo is a 2022 period biographical drama film about the Czech composer Josef Mysliveček (1737–1781), written and directed by Petr Václav. Mysliveček was one of the most acclaimed and prolific composers of opera seria in Italy in the second half of the eighteenth century, and friend to Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. The film stars Vojtěch Dyk, Elena Radonicich, Barbara Ronchi, and Lana Vlady. The music for the film has been recorded by the Czech ensemble Collegium 1704 led by Václav Luks, featuring international soloists. It was selected as the Czech entry for the Best International Feature Film at the 95th Academy Awards. (Source)

My wife and I watched Megashark vs. Crocasaurus.   ::) Yeah, it was as bad as it sounds.

Lost and found is a confrontational documentary and an engaging homage to the photographer whose work is still relevant today. Using his stunning photographs, director Raoul Peck (I Am Not Your Negro) tells of his wanderings, his restlessness as an artist and his daily anger about the complicity of the Western world in the horrors of the apartheid regime.

Ernest Cole: Lost and Found made a triumphant tour of many film festivals and was awarded the L'Oeil d'or for best documentary in Cannes.

I was deeply impressed!

Just saw Captain Blood (1935) for the first time, and what a wonderful, charming adventure!  This swashbuckling classic stars Errol Flynn in his breakout role as Dr. Peter Blood, a wrongly imprisoned physician turned pirate captain. The story follows his journey from slavery in a Caribbean colony to becoming a dashing hero fighting for fortune while retaining his values of justice and freedom. Olivia de Havilland (Gone with the Wind) is radiant as his love interest, and their chemistry is pure magic.  She's beautiful and I was surprised to discover she died only quite recently (2020) reaching the age of 104!  She was a real beauty and I imagine this film must have been a blockbuster given all the special effects (miniature sets, exotic locations), action, adventure, and romance.

Not to be ignored was the thrilling score by Erich Wolfgang Korngold. The sweeping orchestration perfectly captures the sense of high seas adventure, duels, and daring escapes.  It's one of those scores that elevates every scene. The special effects for the naval battles are surprisingly impressive for their time, with miniature ships and clever editing creating epic action sequences that still hold up remarkably well.

If you love adventure, romance, and an unapologetically charismatic hero, Captain Blood is a must-watch and I'll assume set the standard for heroic charm to come.   I haven't seen Errol Flynn's other films like Robin Hood, was he the first action hero heart throb?

Boy, I've been watching Captain Blood since I was a lad 60+ years ago!  Now own as a HD streamer along with the two added recommendations inserted above, if not seen - I have other Flynn films but these three are at the top of my list.  Dave :)

Revisiting A Handful of Dust, I don't believe I understood that it's Judi Dench playing Mrs Beaver.

You just made me realize that, having read the book for a college course yeah these many years ago, I have absolutely no recollection of anything in it beyond the line from The Waste Land which Waugh used for the title. [Nor did I ever see the movie.]
