Quote from: Kalevala on January 26, 2025, 04:11:14 PMMay I ask as to how/why you ended up learning Danish?

K

Initially: One of several languages I crash-coursed in Duolingo for a trip in 2015. A few months of dabbling in Dutch, French and Danish to see if it would be useful at all (answer: yes, actually, it helped a bit) as I travelled through various countries. They didn't have Icelandic and I was already familiar with the UK's main local dialect...

After that: I decided I could only keep learning one. The reasons that Danish was the winner were:

1. I was into Holmboe (well spotted, John)
2. I could watch all the great 'Scandi Noir' shows coming out of Denmark like The Bridge**, The Killing and Borgen.
3. Danish guys are hot.

**Not wholly Danish. But I tell you, watching the final season and knowing who was Danish and who was Swedish was a magnificent experience.

Oh for goodness sake, I've just seen...

The last several iterations of John have lasted no more than a week each. It's getting to the point where I wonder if there's a way of, if you'll pardon the expression, holding him to account. He needs to take some responsibility and ownership instead of flip-flopping on this. If he wants to take breaks from the forum and posting, fine, but it makes absolutely NO sense to keep deleting his account each time. Just keep the bloody thing going in case you want to use it again later.

I would have said my previous comment applies, except in this case there was no "the forum is dying post" or airing of grievances (that I noticed). He wants attention. Is it more complicated than that?

Right. Off topic, I know, but are you still learning Danish?

I don't have any free time whatsoever, but busy is good. It's time I learned another language simply for the pleasure of it. I have enough Spanish and French to get me by, and was surprised as a young man how easy it was to build a functional level of Portuguese on top of that. Always wanted to learn a non-Romance language, and the 'Big 3' Scandi languages have enough common roots with English, are mutually intelligible, and would be different to anything I've poked before.

I fancy Norwegian.

Duolingo?

Any other Bokmal/Norwegian speakers out there?

(apologies for the brief thread excursus)

I think he probably deleted his account to stop himself from logging in and posting out of habit. He recognizes that he is not enjoying his time here but has trouble quitting.

I would understand this if it actually worked in breaking the habit.

No longer learning Danish actively. It's been a while and I'm definitely rusty. I'd try refreshing if I was travelling again.

Norwegian and Swedish are often considered amongst the easiest languages for English speakers to learn. Danish too if it wasn't for the slightly more awkward pronunciation, but in terms of grammar it is perhaps closest of all to English. Thanks to the Danelaw.

Bokmål has the extra advantage of being statistically best at helping you understand the other languages. Norwegians do better at understanding Swedes and Danes than the other way around. So I say go with your fancy.

Seems like a good idea. Do other forums have that?

Well, I don't believe so. I was asking it more tongue-in-cheek.
