Disc 12

Great recording, great ensemble! :)

Well, there we go.. :)

Another contemporary of Josquin Desprez. Apart from the wacky cover, a recording of (two) masses by Alexander Agricola (Alexander Ackerman) is a rare occasion and therfore more than welcome. Both (lengthy) masses (out of eight surviving), Missa Malheur me bat and Missa In myne zyn, have been recorded before. The latter not that long ago by Cappilla Flamenca in a very nice recording on Ricercar.

Well it is a coincidence I am sure, but I am playing this recording right now. Have you already some thoughts about the recording, voices, especially the counters? Of course there is no PDF file to this recording for it is never provided with any of their recordings, and if, the info is of no consequence.

I wouldn't make the claim that this symphony is a masterpiece
I do.  :)

2 CD'S.

Recording: Mauerbach Charterhouse Refectory, 2024.

The music is absolutely fabulous, this I have to admit. The recording is direct and rather forward, it makes the voices a bit raw, but it is all detailed and has depth. For me the counters are coming dangerously close to a point of which I say, enough is enough. Still a great addition to the repertoire.

Yes it is on the official Qobuz site, but it does not show up in my Roon library linked with Qobuz, for whatever reason :o

'Flourish for Glorious John' [Barbirolli], by Ralph Vaughan Williams, from 1957.
I only knew the version by Leonard Slatkin with the Philharmonia Orchestra, taking 1:33 minutes. Now I'm playing the one by Martin Yates, with the BBC Symphony Orchestra, taking no less than 3:05, exactly twice as long! I must say: quite a surprise, Yates is our man!  :)

When I was listening to Qobuz yesterday another incident happened at this streaming service. Accounts were switched, so I suddenly had 720 pop albums in my library, which I never in my life downloaded. All my downloads in my library were gone. So another member was confronted with my classical albums, and I identified this guy, he was from Ohio, through the Roon forum. Of course we were both pissed off by another incident at Qobuz. Of lately there are to many. All is restored now, but is stopped me listening at a CD, by the switch of the account. I had to remove manually 754 pop albums from my library, for Qobuz was sorry but they could not do this. My listening day was ruined of course, but I was lucky for I spoke to someone who had to remove 5700 classical CD's manually!!!!!! 3700 classical CD's from me, and he also had a lot of Pop music to remove. which also came from another account.
Just sayin, maybe anyone else had this problem.

Haydn's "Philosopher" symphony on the radio.

Hadn't heard this in what seems a long while, and it's a pleasure to have an old friend pay an unexpected visit.

Oh my, what a mess up! Time to return to the stone ages of buying CDs.  ;)

Seriously though, that is terrible! Poor guy who had to remove your giant library.  ;D

A missed opportunity for new music exploration.

Isabelle Faust and Pablo Heras-Casado (dedicatees of the work), with the Orchestre de Paris, perform Peter Eötvös' Alhambra (Violin Concerto No. 3)

An exuberant, pointillistic score, with bravura solo writing for the violin (which Frau Faust makes sound sooo "natural"). A very attractive piece!

I am really tempted by that set....  :-[

Nielsen: Suite for piano, op.45

Amazing music, though I felt that the final movement lost steam a little. It will be interesting to hear the other recording I own and whether the impression is different. But this still rammed home that Nielsen was a very modernist composer (and also that comparisons with Sibelius are apt to mislead even though they were exact contemporaries).

It seems a very advisable box set indeed; I know well only Atherton's Schoenberg, that is undoubtedly excellent, but from what I'm listening of the Mozart works, the quality of the interpretations is absolutely fine.

Now disc 7 of this amazing box set.

Unlike @Madiel , again, I LOVE 'A Musical Joke'. I think we are just like Ernie and Bert, when it comes to Mozart's Serenades and Divertimenti.
