My dream is to have enough money to open a Cinerama or at least old-style 70mm-screen theater and reshow movies like Khartoum , 2001: A Space Odyssey, How The West Was Won and others.

That dream will remain a dream!

I have a SMILEBOX version on BLu-Ray of How The West Was Won, which preserves the Cinerama experience, albeit on smaller screens.

This thriller about a TSA agent forced to let a dubious package through the checkpoint at LAX feels like a real throwback to movies like Speed. I liked it!

The World According to Garp. Don't think I've watched this since seeing it in the cinema back when it opened. Wonderful. I didn't realize back then that it was Amanda Plummer playing Ellen James.

Hacksaw Ridge (2016) - wife's choice for a Memorial Day movie selected from a long IMDB list - synopsis of film and cast below (first quote) - second quote short bio of Desmond Doss - Gibson does a great job directing IMO - the battle scenes are really grusesome; of course, Okinawa was the bloodiest battle in the Pacific with nearly a quarter million deaths! Hacksaw Ridge is a 2016 epic biographical war film directed by Mel Gibson and written by Andrew Knight and Robert Schenkkan, based on the 2004 documentary The Conscientious Objector directed by Terry Benedict. Set in World War II, Andrew Garfield stars as Desmond Doss, an American combat medic who, as a Seventh-day Adventist, refused to use a weapon of any kind. Doss became the first conscientious objector to be awarded the Medal of Honor, for his service during the Battle of Okinawa. The supporting cast includes Sam Worthington, Luke Bracey, Teresa Palmer, Hugo Weaving, Rachel Griffiths, and Vince Vaughn. (Source)

Desmond Thomas Doss (1919-2006)[1] was a United States Army corporal who served as a combat medic with an infantry company in World War II. Due to his religious beliefs, he refused to carry a weapon. He was twice awarded the Bronze Star Medal for actions on Guam and in the Philippines. Doss further distinguished himself in the Battle of Okinawa by saving an estimated 75 men, acting on his own, becoming the first of only three conscientious objectors to receive the Medal of Honor. The Battle of Okinawa was the bloodiest battle of the Pacific War. The most complete tally of deaths during the battle is at the Cornerstone of Peace monument at the Okinawa Prefectural Peace Memorial Museum, which identifies the names of each individual who died at Okinawa in World War II. As of 2023, the monument lists 242,046 names, including 149,634 Okinawans, 77,823 Imperial Japanese soldiers, 14,010 Americans, and smaller numbers of people from South Korea, the United Kingdom, North Korea and Taiwan. Somehow hadn't appreciated in my first viewing many years ago just what star quality Margaret Lockwood had.

I watched an amusing satire centered around cloning. It doesn't go much beyond "rich guy is bad and stupid" though, but it makes up for it with sharp dialogue.

Well last few nights a couple more films to celebrate Memorial Day:

Top Gun: Maverick (2022) - short synopsis below w/ Cruise 30+ years older but still looking good - great action scenes and good story - looks great in 4K! Excellent review HERE - wife lost interest (as expected) but I really like this sequel and enjoy the film more than the first one.

From Here to Eternity (1953) - summary below and what a cast; "won 8 Academy Awards out of 13 nominations, including Best Picture, Best Director (Fred Zinnemann), Adapted Screenplay, Supporting Actor (Frank Sinatra), and Supporting Actress (Donna Reed)" (same link). Highly recommended.  Dave

Top Gun: Maverick is an American action drama film directed by Joseph Kosinski and written by Ehren Kruger, Eric Warren Singer, and Christopher McQuarrie. In this sequel to the 1986 film Top Gun, Tom Cruise reprises his starring role as the naval aviator Maverick. The ensemble cast also features Miles Teller, Jennifer Connelly, Jon Hamm, Glen Powell, Monica Barbaro, Lewis Pullman, Ed Harris, and Val Kilmer (in his final film role). The story involves Maverick confronting his past while training a group of younger Top Gun graduates, including the son of his deceased best friend, for a dangerous mission. (Source)

From Here to Eternity is an American romantic war drama film directed by Fred Zinnemann and written by Daniel Taradash, based on the 1951 novel of the same name by James Jones. It deals with the tribulations of three United States Army soldiers, played by Burt Lancaster, Montgomery Clift, and Frank Sinatra, stationed on Hawaii in the months leading up to the attack on Pearl Harbor. Deborah Kerr and Donna Reed portray the women in their lives. The supporting cast includes Ernest Borgnine, Philip Ober, Jack Warden, Mickey Shaughnessy, Claude Akins, and George Reeves.(Source)
