arpeggio

I just downloaded the Walter Piston Toccata for Orchestra from the following set:

I downloaded it from Presto Music.

What is nice about downloading from Presto is that one can purchase individual tracks.

Great stuff, Arpeggio. I must have a look at that series !

Alright, this is probably the last order of 2025.
Arkivmusic has an extra 15% off through tomorrow so I used it to clean up my wishlist there. (All but one of these were already on sale.)

(That set is from Orfeo)

I presume these are transcriptions of the string sonatas?

Absolutely charming music.

Mathieu Carrière is an interesting figure. I guess he must have a speaking role in this recording. He had a long and prolific career as an actor but is mostly known for the roles the troubled teen in Volker Schlöndorff's Der Junge Törless, after Musil's novel and the student in La Maison des Bories. A remarkable actor.

Andriessen is one of the most interesting contemporary composers.

Is that discount applied at checkout? Do you need an email code? I'm not seeing it advertised on the homepage.

They sent out an email. The official code is ArkivChristmas, but it was automatically applied for me.

This Recording includes the Donald Hunsberger arrangement of the 'Marine Hymn".  The Marine Band always plays this as an encore.  Hunsberger was a member of the Marine Band.  After he left the Marine Band, he was the conductor of the Eastman Wind Ensemble.  He succeeded Fenell.

The source of the "Marines' Hymn" melody is interesting.  It was taken from Geneviève de Brabant, an opera written by Jacques Offenbach and first performed in 1859.  It is unknown who wrote the lyrics.

Interesting personal side note concerning the "Marine Hymn".  My father served with Marines during WWII.  He was  one of the Marines defending Midway during the Battle of Midway.  After the war he joined the Marine Corps Reserve.  He eventually retired as a colonel.  When he passed away, he was interned at Arlington Cemetery.  At the funeral, everyone was crying, my mother, my wife, my grandson, etc. I was the rock keeping everyone together.  Because of my father's rank there was a small band from the Marine band.  When they started playing the "Marine Hymn", (as a hymn) I lost it.

A second-hand copy turned up today. I'm rolling the dice that very good condition means it has its cardboard case. I expect it won't turn up until into the new year.

What, if I might ask, did you not like about the last copy [I don't think that that was the one that you sadly got oil on?].

Purchased a new used CD today.  I remember liking the Ligeti that I've heard, so took a chance on it.  It's on DG and conducted by Boulez and has the the Chamber Concerto, Ramifications, String Quartet No. 2, Aventures, and Lux aeterna.

Pleased that I spotted an inexpensive CD (2 actually) of Firkusny playing Janacek and pointed it out to my friend (giving it high praise) and he bought it.   :)  Hope that he enjoys it particularly as it's a favorite of mine...we'll see!

Just bought:

I haven't finished dealing with the return of the first botched copy of Catone (it took a while for them to respond in the Christmas period, but will be getting a refund including return postage), but another copy turned up on eBay in Australia - which immediately makes life a hell of a lot easier and quicker. The price is not as amazing as the botched copy, but it's still reasonable in the Naive Edition scheme of things and I've got confidence in this seller. I don't think I've used them before, but all the indications are good.

And there was a postage deal if I bought something else. In fact if I'd just gone with the Beethoven I would have saved money, but Abbado appears to be a good choice for the Mendelssohn symphonies as well, so I've got all those extra discs for an additional outlay of A$6.48.
Nobody has to apologise for using their brain.

I don't post everything I buy here, but this time, at the end of the year (whatever  ::) ), I wait for  another large box that I hope will be delivered in the coming days. There are also some smaller boxes that I'm looking forward to with joy.
