Front cover,  Melchior de Hondecoeter, DasVogelkonzert, 1670

These sonatas surprise with their freedom,  unusual progressions, hidden ornaments, ingenious colorations. Stylus phantasticus in full colours and both opus numbers no less. A  playground for  multitudes of emotions, both sensitive and jubilant. Les Timbres do themselves proud with this finely chiseled and refined performance, elegant and supremely balanced. There are a lot of superb details to be found in this pristine recording. Two hours of listening feels like a present when the music comes so unforced and flowing into one's listening den.

Yes, this is awesome Northern German middle-baroque music.  ;)

Camille Saint-Saëns

Symphony 3 in C minor, op. 78

Thierry Escaich, organ
Liège RPO - Jean-Jacques Kantorow

Kantorow and the BIS engineers try to capture the pipe organ as part of the orchestra rather than as soloist. I have enough recordings of Saint-Saëns' Organ Symphony to appreciate such an approach.

How does he compare to e.g. Michael Ponti or Maria Lettberg ?

I no longer own the Ponti, but I don't recall enjoying very much. It's on par with Letterber, based on the last time I listened to her set. I might actually prefer his.

Absolute gold, both of them!!

I listened to Mozart's Duo for violin and viola yesterday, recorded by Grumiaux et al. A wonderful piece, and graceful performance. Today I listened to the piece by the Kuijken Trio. This performance is a miracle. It is a bit hard to find, Apple Music did not have it, I had to spring for a lossless download unheard, but I assume a priori that any performance by Kuijken is work hearing.

Formerly Scarpia (Scarps), Baron Scarpia, Ghost of Baron Scarpia, Varner, Ratliff, Parsifal, perhaps others.

Good to see that the Kuijken dynasty is still going strong!  :)

My morning listening is a set with a selection recorded at a festival in the Burgundian village of Talant:

Common denominator here is unknown repertoire. The result is a mix of polyphonic pieces, mostly Franco-Flemish, but also Italian, Spanish and Polish. Some quite interesting, some not.

Beethoven's Septet again, and this time I've avoiding relaxing on the lounge lest I become too relaxed to hear all the music.

The aim is to be relaxed enough to sleep well, just AFTER it finishes.
Nobody has to apologise for using their brain.
