I keep this book on the nightstand of my guestroom.

If you've ever been interested in science fiction, then you will recognize the author's name.  ;D

Indeed I do, RB was the only noteworthy author I've ever met. His books a were great help to me at a troubled time, and as I've somehow never heard of With Cat for Comforter you've given me something to search for - thanks, K and Bachtoven.  8)

The RB cat book is teeny tiny, but sweet; been ages since I've read it.

Golden retrievers strike me as such sweet and patient dogs...letting the kitten crawl all over it, tug on it, swat at its ears, etc.  Cute also how the kitten yawns at one point, yet still keeps on playing.  Makes me think of a toddler who then all of a sudden "clunks out" and falls to sleep.  :)

This groomer posts her videos of how she deals with dogs and cats.  This one is of a huge Maine coon cat.  I had a Wegie who didn't travel well when I had to take her to the vet's, so I can sympathize both with the cat and his owner(s).  And also the workers at the vets who had to do clean up duty; that, and I brought  other towels/bedding for the trip home.  Dang, I still miss that cat. :(

I was watching a TV show last night and a woman had recently suffered a miscarriage. When asked how she was doing, she said, "I'm like someone with broken ribs: I look normal on the outside but inside every breath I draw is so painful." I think that is a good way to describe how those of us feel who have lost a kitty.

I remember what it felt like and I feel for you and your wife.  The older that I became, I realized how much their personalities, quirks, needs, etc., differed.  You can get another kitty, which you will probably fall in love with, but there will always be that hole in your heart.  The hole and the pain does get smaller over time, but it will always be there; that's the result of having made the choice of opening up your heart and to have loved someone....including an animal.

How is Fazi doing?

Thank you. I think it's going to take a long time for the pain to subside...or even faintly dull. Part of it is his age--2.5 years old is cruelly too young. Then there's his incredible personality. He was always so happy (purred all the time), he absolutely loved playing with his toys and especially chasing a laser dot, and he was so affectionate, especially toward me. He loved to curl up on my chest and rest the side of his face over my heart. Excuse me while I wipe away some tears. I'm sure we'll deeply love a new kitten, but she (we definitely want a female since they are less prone to the bladder issues that Zeus had) but she can never replace Zeus, just like Fazi and Zeus couldn't replace Lucy and Ethel. Our vet strongly recommends that we get him a kitten for a companion--she will help to heal all of our hearts.

Fazi is still hazing a rough time. He still makes a mournful cry while searching for Zeus, which further breaks our hearts.

My last cat didn't last that long, but he was loved.

In the meantime, try and focus on the gift that you do have; not everyone can afford to adopt, provide decent healthcare, good food, etc.  If I might add, animals also pick up on what their humans are feeling.  Enjoy Fazi and be there fully for him.  Be positive, play with him, and enjoy what you do have.

Just some suggestions.

Meant with love,

When my older sister went off to college, l unofficially " inherited " her cat, and she was the only true pet in my life.

Peanut Butter ( PB ) was a good- hearted Persian-Angorra with lovely eyes, luxurious ( and ubiquitous, l can still hear my mother muttering to herself while vacuuming ) fur, and a gentle playfulness which persisted well into old age.

She adopted me very quickly after my sister left home for college and her subsequent married life. Even when Sis was back home to visit, PB was my cat ( a self-flattering way of acknowledging that l was hers ).

After l was in bed, l would wait for the inevitable sound of claws on wood, as she tried to pull my bedroom door open. I would open the door just enough for her to nose her way through, and then shut it ( knowing she would let me know if she needed out ). She would then jump up, curl up at my feet, and we would fall asleep together ( If l woke up during the night, she'd still be curled at my feet, but under the covers ).

When she was age seventeen, she began a subtle decline which manifested itself mostly as a marked lack in grooming. My dad reminded me of how long she had graced our family, and hinted at the possibility of the inevitable. Not long afterward, PB suffered a stroke and seizure, which l witnessed.

When l informed my father, he advised me that he would be taking her to our vet as soon as the vet could see her, and that there was a likelihood of her not returning ( this was decades ago, when treatment options for feline trauma were limited and frequently beyond the means of most households ).

And so l looked my last upon she who was my first friend, a companion l knew from my earliest memories through college.

I found solace in music, in new college friendships and romance, in expanding my knowledge and experience in Astronomy, and in exploring adulthood in general.

But nothing could ever replace the memories of flashing paws, the LOUDEST purring known to man, glowing eyes, and as gentle a personality as Felis catus has ever provided.

Fifty years on, l still look forward to seeing her again.

CowCat disappeared a few years ago. I think it was dying and hid somewhere as cats sometimes do.

Oh, no!   :(   I'm sorry to hear that.  How many years were the three of you together?

Do you have a "new" kitty?

Sadly no. Outdoor cats are nearly extinct in this neighborhood.

Minou (AKA CowCat) patrolled the street for a number of years. I don't know how many.

What about having a solely indoor kitty?

Upon the advice of our vet, we adopted this adorable 9 week old kitten yesterday to try and ease some of Fazi's grief. (They have not met face to face yet, but he knows she's here!!) She's quite a bundle of energy, despite being spayed yesterday, so still photos have been something of a challenge! (I will continue to attempt to get better photos.) Anyway, here is CoCo!!

These two were taken last week at her foster home:

I am delighted for you all.  Your kitten already looks to be at peace.  I pray that it all works out well for all of you.  I have faith that Fazi and CoCo will become fast friends.
