Florestan

I'm looking for good sets or individual recordings of Schubert's Masses. Any recommendation will be gratefully received.

This is emphatically recommended. The price is low and the performances are magnificent. One of the best bargains out there.  8)

Dancing Divertimentian

Bach's Chromatic Fantasy BWV 903; Sonatas BWV 528, 530, 1001; Toccata BWV 912; Ciaccona from BWV 1004; Adagio from BWV 564.

Alpha label.

Yves Rechsteiner playing a pedal harpsichord (which I know nothing about).

Veit Bach-a baker who found his greatest pleasure in a little cittern which he took with him even into the mill and played while the grinding was going on. In this way he had a chance to have the rhythm drilled into him. And this was the beginning of a musical inclination in his descendants. JS Bach

I commented on that disc some time ago HERE.

In retrospect, it proves to be a disc for special occasions. Very nice for an occasional outing, but it does not hold a central place in my Bach keyboard collection. I might give it a spin this morning! :)

The new erato

That's one of my favorite discs of the past year, but I have to say that the coupling strikes me as rather odd.
Seconded; both re Jolivet (an original, occasinally jazzy but very probing work, a great concerto) and re the coupling.

To comment on those I have:

Well the Rontgen is fun and occasionally inventive and original stuff, a definitive buy.
The Saygun I found to be sightly generic Bartoklike modernity lacking true originality, but I am working on the disc
The Koechlin quartets I found slightly boring - but aim to listen more here as well.

Nevertheless a fascinating interpretation, but maybe you find him too extrovert?

As to special occasions, what is a special occasion? Being the owner of a growing collection of CDs I realized long time ago, that I cannot listen to anything more frequently than just occasionally. Yes of course I can, but if I do, a large part of my collection will remain un-listened to.

Well, I've been spending the last few days looking through the reviews of the new issue of Fanfare (July-August) - great front cover w/ a pic of the mezzo-soprano Jennifer Larmore, a definite improvement for this magazine!  ;) :D

All of these are of interest to me - only 1 or 2 would duplicate recordings that I already own, so most would be new to me!  Any comments would be appreciated - thanks.  :)

Thanks for the comments - I've shown the ones that I decided to buy (so far) above, and have likely commented on most if not all in the 'listening thread' - I've been really pleased w/ most of these recordings; however, I do agree w/ you on the Saygun - just my 2nd CD of his music, and takes some re-listening at least for me - this is a mix of Near Eastern & Western music but quite interesting -  :D

So apparently there isn't a consensus as to Rechsteiner. Well, back to square one. Thanks, Que and premont!

Every one of them is worth your money and interest Dave, although Gubaidulina is not a composer I would willingly buy.

No, maybe not exactly too extrovert. But it can be, and perhaps that is on account of the instrument, a bit overbearing. Nevertheless, I gave it a spin yesterday and very much enjoyed it.

What I meant by special occassion is, that it's (for me) for a more special mood. Of course, one could say that goes for any disc, but for me in Bach-listening it apllies to this disc more than others. But yes, agreed: fascinating nevertheless. :)

Is that the rare Sibelius you've been looking for for years?

More being curious than looking for it, especially since it never has been released on CD. This Bearac label is private LP to CD-r transfer and I'm afraid I'm going to pass, haven't noticed it's paypal payment only. Maybe Melodiya will release it eventually.

Harry, thanks for the comments - I've already purchased over half of these discs, and indeed have enjoyed all so far.

Regarding Gubaidulina, I have absolutely nothing by this Russian composer, but this 2-CD offering which includes the St. John Passion & St. John Easter performed w/ Rilling received a superb review by Jerry Dubins in Fanfare, possibly the 'choral release' of '08?  For those interested, CLICK on the image, the Dubins review is reprinted on the Arkiv Music site -  :D  P.S. the price there at least is a 'little much' at the moment!

has anyone heard this? The programme is wild. Mostly interested in the 3rd sonata
I have his 3rd sonata on Nimbus from 1985 (the one included in the GPOC, I think). I am not sure if this is the same recording, but the one on Nimbus is nothing to be excited about. On the slower side, very grounded and well articulated but that's about it.

Recently, I purchased a CPO disc which had their 2008 catalog attached - nearly 300 pages long and the size of a 'double' jewel box; I've spent a number of hours over the last few days perusing the discs & assessing evaluations on Amazon & other websites - jotted down nearly 3 dozen of interest to me into my PDA (could have easily put in 2-3x that number, and even stuck w/ instrumental works to simplify the procedure) - there are a LOT of good looking recordings from this company (already own many of them!) -  :D

The CPO Catalog is located HERE as a searchable PDF file, which can also be downloaded (not sure how many different languages are available for download?) - but, if possible try to obtain a printed copy - quite beautiful w/ color photos of nearly all of the CDs!
