I should probably like Steely Dan. It seems every time I turn on the car radio (when NPR isn't playing classical music) in the middle of a song that is extremely well-recorded with interesting chord progressions, it's always Steely Dan.

Made in '04, but if I didn't know any better I'd say it was made in '89. Buchanan's voice has changed surprisingly little in 20 years, not to mention the now retro-sounding electronic drums and synths.

All right — but only if you listen to all the Blue Nile albums. :D

I just sampled some of this on itunes. Not quite my thing, but it sounds nice.

Walk Across the Rooftops and Hats are their best (they've only released four albums in 20 years). Since you're an audiophile, it should interest you that Rooftops was one of the first albums recorded specifically for the CD format. From Allmusic:

The Blue Nile's debut album has a rather fascinating genesis. Scotland's Linn Electronics wanted a demo track to demonstrate the fidelity and versatility of their new recording console and tapped a struggling local trio, the Blue Nile, to provide it. Their effort was a deliberately disjunctive song called "A Walk Across the Rooftops." To demonstrate the recording equipment's dynamic range and clarity, the song was arranged most peculiarly, with vocals, guitar, bass, keyboards, drums, and full string and horn sections all appearing, but never at the same time. Linn liked the song so much that they formed a record label and bankrolled the recording of this full album.

My, my, my... we're treating each other just like strangers...  ;D

:D

Have you heard any of the unreleased My Squelchy Life songs? Someone put 'I Fall Up" on youtube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L2s9PdEOues

Doesn't seem to be Eno at his best. I guess I can see why My Squelchy Life wasn't released.
