Karl, One of the people I was with just snorted in derision and walked away. I was a good boy and explained the position. I don't know whether they had been brought by boat, plane or space ship, but it was a bit of a surprise. To be honest, I could see my answer was not enlightening, no light bulb moment for them.

I knew I could rely on you, Mike, to meet the crisis with grace and resignation!

My vote (still with my mouth hanging open) is for "space ship."  Surely only Americans abducted, subjected to experiments and then released could have made such an observation.

Yikes, no wonder McCain is ahead... ;D

Bruce, I do have other such stories, but perhaps for another time, my aim is not to highlight how dumb Americans can be; I have plenty of evidence to the contrary.

Well, there was Edison, of course.

No worries, Mike, I am well aware that there are those who think of (e.g.) Venice, California when the city is mentioned.  There is a late-night talk show host here in the U.S., Jay Leno, who has an occasional feature in which he roams the streets, asking innocent bystanders questions like "Who is Michelle Obama?" and gets answers like "Uh, isn't she a rock singer?"  ;D

When I was 20, I flew with a friend to Corsica. There were two girls on the flight from Birmingham, UK, not Alanbama; going to the same place as we were. When we landed they were very puzzled as to why some of the locals did not speak English. It emerged they had not really grasped what 'abroad' meant. I also recall asking one of them why she was wearing two watches.......the answer, "Because one of them dosen't work."

Yes, she had been pondering leaving for some time--part of the reason was the dearth of opera fans here--but I hope she returns.

I'm good at starting threads, then butting out. So I'd make a great moderator.

That doesn't look like Vienna.
