Schoenberg is so interesting, Harry. It's as if he decided to push the harmonic territories of Beethoven's Grosse Fuge even further. Shostakovich and Mahler of course explored those realms as well.

His String Quartets are really fascinating.

I have a few of them actually!

And this one.

Indeed! They easily my favorite works of his.  :)

Downloads from eclassical:

Bruckner
5th, SWR Orchestra, Stuttgart, Schuricht conducting (1962, Hänssler)
Otto Olsson: his magnum opus, credo symphoniacum and other organ works (love this composer).

BTW Eclassical is busy uploading interesting stuff such as the Gielen Mahler symphonies (some of his Bruckner as well) and other interesting Hänssler stuff : Henze 7th symphony (Cambreling), Mahler 3 + Strauss Alpensinfonie by Schuricht, and what is for me the definitive version of the Bruckner 9: Leitner, Stuttgart (superb playing and sound).

Bach organ works, a portion of Olivier Vernet's integral (4 discs, assorted chorals, P&F etc).

A recital disc by the strangely named soprano Measha Brueggergosman. Berlioz Les Nuits d'été, and arias by Massenet.

Lute music for late night listening by French baroque composer Nicolas Vallet.

A trio of 2-harpsichords concertos by Bach sons CPE and WF (Staier, Goebel, on Archiv) . I listened to the first (CPE) and it's a beauty. The slow movement is amazing in its depth of feeling.

the phone rings and somebody says,
"hey, they made a movie about
Mahler, you ought to go see it.
he was as f*cked-up as you are."

Just landed:

Tippett
Concerto for Double String Orchestra
Magnificat & Nunc dimittis
Fantasia concertante on a theme of Corelli
&c.

Tippett
Concerto for Violin, Viola and Cello
Concerto for Piano

Had to fetch these in on my own account;  paulb sent them with his compliments, but also, so poorly packaged that when they arrived, they were only shards  :'(

And, at long last, the Shostakovich re-orchestration of the Schumann Cello Concerto, about which I have long had keen curiosity:

Karl,

Let me know how you feel about Tippett"s TRIPLE

Thom

I ordered this one in an impulse.

Heard somebody say that the Elegy is great. Is anyone familiar with this composer and/or this recording?

I concur your thoughts on OLSSON.  I have mentioned to Harry about his SYMPHONY IN G....MY favorite work of his...
