Classical CDs are selling surprisingly well in Germany - despite the finance crisis and even without the help of marketable crossover artists. Maybe there's something about the music itself.[/url]

* We are the cause.

Hence this being the proper place to post this.

Thanks, Harry!  :)

Well, the Wagner on it is pretty good, in any case.  ;D

(One of the most overrated 8th to the extend anyone still rates it highly.)
Agreed on both. I thought the Bruckner was a mess, though I enjoy the Wagner. And as I paid 99c for it, I can't complain.

Same here. I had it when it was on lp, so that's many many years ago... I thought then that it was rather incoherent and unstructured, with spongy textures, cavernous sound and not one bit of excitement. But since then I've come to appreciate Celibidache's Bruckner (with the same orchestra), so maybe I should give it a try - if I can find it for 99 cents  :D

My initial impression, after one listen, falls into line with you gentlemen. Nothing special here...nothing to see hear...move along...to the Wagner.  I was expecting (hoping) for something like his Fifth with the WP which, despite the use of the Schalk edition (or maybe because of it  ;D ) I've always enjoyed for its individuality and exciting Finale. I'm not ready to give up on this Eighth yet though. It may grow on me after a few more listens...or else I'll be ready to toss it into the garbage bin. At least it was cheap  :D

Are you learnéd gentlemen familiar with this Knappertsbusch Bruckner3? It uses the Schalk edition. Worth a purchase?

Some sale prices on MDT for certain labels are hardly better than what I can get in the States.  I have to be quite selective with MDT sale items.

It is time to start a CD collection of Bach keyboard works by Ralph Kirkpatrick (already have a number of recordings by him on LP).  Just ordered the following CD this morning ...

It is an excellent CD set IMO at a very attractive price.  I bought the set over a year ago ...

Yes, you could do a lot worse than a classic Tristan for 9 dollars!  :o  Many think that is the best version ever recorded.

I think I might have paid something on the order of $15 or $16 before shipping but it was brand new.  I do not buy used CD's.

Hi George.  Karl Bohm and Birgit Nilsson were an excellent combo for any Wagner opera.

It was Like New on Amazon but I figured I could take that chance.  Well, all other notable versions of Tristan were selling for 20+...

The version I received was actually on Philips with a nice libretto to follow, great notes, and all, great sound quality too... does anyone know how the DG version compares?

Really?  This is a little unusual, Karl Bohm was always a DG artist much as Marriner was always a Philips artist and the demarcation was always quite clear.  My version has the usual quality I have come to expect from DG.

This month's eMusic downloads!

Alexandre Tharaud plays Bach on modern piano; Karel Ancerl conducts orchestral music by Jan Hanus

Victor Borge Live; an early Bernstein recording of Brahms' Fourth

Vladimir Horowitz' favorite encores; a very highly regarded new Schumann lieder album

From this Horowitz album I only downloaded three tracks - the selections by Moritz Moszkowski; this Julia Fischer recordings completes my purchase of the complete Fischer Mozart concertos

Harnoncourt and the Concentus Musicus Wien perform Mozart's Symphonies Nos 1, 4, 4a, 5, 6, 7, 7a, 8, 9, 43, and 55. eMusic, in their infinite wisdom, have labeled this album "Country/Folk".

I'm still utterly frustrated by eMusic's inability to upload either Paavo Jarvi's ongoing Beethoven cycle, despite adding RCA in July, or the rest of the Deutsche Harmonia Mundi catalog (whither Harnoncourt's Paris Symphonies!).

Brian,  How was the Bach?  I presume your download of SACD was only for the stereo tracks since the SACD tracks can only be played on a SACD player.
