I know!  ;D  Also, my hard drive and external HD are both full, and buying more CDs is cheaper than buying a new external HD. At least, it is right now.  ;D

Any thoughts on the Eschenbach or Gilels? Worth getting?

DavidW, thanks for the suggestions. I'm looking for my first-ever Beethoven violin sonata set, though; I have the Kreutzer (Thibaud/Cortot, Perlman) and Spring (Perlman), but none of the others.

Gilels, yes.  Eschenbach is pretty good, but he's no Gilels. :)

Oh first ever eh?  Alrighty buy the Grumaiux set with confidence, in fact I think I'll give it a spin myself today. :)

A huge, huge mistake, Brian.  ;) Although there are another top complete sets (HIP: Schornsheim, Brilliant set; non-HIP: John McCabe), Brautigam is the best in this repertoire. And, listen to Gurn, nobody knows how much time this set will be available.

:)

Yeah he's mind-blowingly better than the competition!  I thought Schornsheim was lively, but he's just breathtaking. :)  I haven't heard McCabe, my modern piano recording is Brendel, and the only one else I heard is Richter.

There will never be another era like the Golden Age of Hollywood.  We didn't know how to blow up buildings then so we had no choice but to tell great stories with great characters.-Ben Mankiewicz

The Gilels set is worth getting given the price alone and Gilels was one of the greatest Russian pianists that ever lived.  Eschenbach was actually an excellent concert pianist.  I enjoy his Mozart PC No. 21 when he actually conducted from the piano ...

Brand new Isabelle Faust/Alexander Melnikov set on HM is garnering surprising amount of raves over on r.m.c.r. Haven't seen any professional reviews yet, but having heard both of them I'll venture a guess that the set could really be great.

I've heard Faust in the Schumann VSs and she is really wow!  Not surprised her Beethoven might get a wow as well. :)

I've heard her live playing Schumann Violin Concerto, and that was big wow.

Not too surprising. Those are two great artists.

That Brendel set (4 CDs) is gold dust. Probably my favorite Brendel and very near to my favorite Haydn.

Yeah it's wonderful isn't it? :)  It made me completely reevaluate Brendel, I did not appreciate him until I heard his Haydn! :o

Same thing here, Dave; Brendel was another pianist for me after those superb discs.  :)

Entirely true. Who needs complete Haydn, after that?  ;)

The dry wit is in full sparkle... perhaps the only disc where recorded Brendel is approximating the quality of Brendel live.

What do you guys think of Hamelin's Haydn?

IMO, too much Hamelin and just a little bit of Haydn there. Not my cup of tea at all.

It is very good indeed, but not better than the sets I mentioned earlier (Argerich/Kremer & the recent Cerovsek/Jumppanen).

Have you seen any review of this CD by the Santa Fe Listener on Amazon?

Brian

It's a "Please Buy Me" sale, $9.19, so I'd need to act fast. I only have one "Trout" (Sviatoslav Richter and friends, EMI) and none of the other pieces.

I saw that, too. I have both the Schubert and Schumann quintets, so I chose to pass this one.

What do you guys think of Hamelin's Haydn?

On the positive side, his technique is outstanding.

On the negative side he's cool to the point of cold; often dry as a bone.

The sonatas are a mixed bag -- good  in a couple of sonatas but poor in most.

I know someone who says that the second set is better than the first -- I can't see it myself.

Avoid unless you are serious about building a big library of Haydn sonata performance.
