I'm *this* close to abandoning this forum (it's not you; it's me--just not buying classical like I used to) but I'd miss a lot of you guys too much.  :'(

MN Dave

I tried to read some Pooh to my niece and nephew. They said they'd heard it already and wandered off.  >:(

There's something in that statement that I find very disturbing. Although I'm not quite sure what it is.

I still buy it though, occasionally. Not enough to warrant masturbating about it every day on a forum.

You need not abandon the forum for that. Just sit in a quiet corner -- how about on a lawn chair just outside the shed? -- and watch the rest of the bunch go at it. :D

At times like these, I ask myself what Psmith would say. And I think at times like these Psmith would ask himself what Napoleon would have said. And I think at times like these Napoleon would have said summink like 'Sacre bleu!' or 'Je ne sais quoi!' or 'Cherchez la femme!' So that line of thinking isn't all that much help, really, Comrade Dave. But I do find myself wondering who would do the essential repairs on the shed, and it doesn't bear thinking about, really.

That's what nephews and nieces are for. It's what they're designed to do. It keeps us in our place.

I'm always on call.  ;D

Announcing the campaign to Save The Shed!

We need to find GREAT CLASSICAL STUFF for Minnesota Dave!

Some recently discovered or revisited composers for you: various periods, various styles.

Etienne Mehul (4 symphonies, overtures)
Ernst Toch (symphonies and string quartets)

"Meet Miss Ruth Sherwood, from Columbus, Ohio, the Middle of the Universe!"

- Brian Aherne introducing Rosalind Russell in  My Sister Eileen (1942)

karlhenning

Toch!  I need to revisit those symphonies (in the first place) and explore the chamber music (in the second).

MN Dave

Thanks, Cato. Recommendations noted.

Could you kindly add an extra screw or an extra nail, or a hammer perhaps? A total of 13 [cue: scary music] pieces of hardware doesn't bode well in a rescue mission such as this one. Even for a shed of horror [repeat: scary music]. :(

Triskaidekaphobia counts Arnold Schoenberg among its vicitims.  He died at age 76 (7+6=13) on Friday the 13th in July (the 6th month counting back from December, the 7th month from January).

One source he claims he died at 13 minutes before midnight.   :o

I haven't really been able to warm to Toch.

Can anyone recommend a gift for a 7 year old?

Oh, so that's why he didn't champion the 13-tone technique!

It could be true. I wouldn't have believed a word of it had the source stated 13 minutes past 1 P.M.

A forte-piano, some lessons in playing and composition, and a packaged trip to Europe.

In my experience, a tin of livid green paint, 7 screws, and 6 nails of assorted sizes have useful applications in a wide variety of situations.

(And it's 14 if you count the paint.)
