I'll probably order this next week, since I've been enjoying listening to Monteverdi's Madrigals lately. This recording also has a bit of the music of other composers like Allegri, Palestrina & Schutz & is at budget price, so it looks to be a winner for me. It was put out late last year, so I don't expect any member here has got it, but maybe I might get lucky & someone can tell me about it...

Weinberg: Symphony No. 1 / Cello concerto
Dmitry KHRYCHOV, (cello), St. Petersburg State Academic Symphony Orchestra, conductor Alexander TITOV

I would appreciate some opinion on these CD

Lethevich

I'm not enamoured by the production qualities of that series - it's very good (and some of the repertoire is very rare) but when compared to the Chandos series on this particular composer, I find that Weinberg disc a bit lacking.

Would this be your first disc of the composer's music? If so, the Chandos discs make a more pleasant introduction. The Fantasia (for cello and orchestra) on the concertos disc is superb, and another disc in the series features the 1st symphony. It's a shame that the Melodiya disc of Kondrashin conducting the 4th and 6th symphonies seems badly out of print, as it's a very fine introduction.

If you're already familiar with his music, then the Northern Flowers disc is a worthy addition to a collection - a committed performance, but nothing particularly luxurious about the whole endeavour. The sound isn't as bad as I am making out (it was recorded post 2000 after all), I just feel that I've been spoilt by the Chandos series which is state of the art.

(Edit: how many times am I going to say "disc" in this post? ::))

I'm just going to weigh in and say that the Cello Concerto is absolutely stunning and should be acquired any way possible! Hopefully Chandos will be recording it as part of their state-of-the-art and really artistically fine series, and hopefully soon. Until then, I'm happy with Rostropovich on Brilliant Classics. But god, what a great concerto. I'd have no trouble rating it my favorite Weinberg, just ahead of the Fantasia, though I have not heard the symphonies.

Lethevich

That CC sounds awesome, I'll put it on my research list. I presume it compares well to the Khachaturian? I am fond of that one (less so of Kabalevsky's).

I'm definetely getting this one at some stage but I was curious if other Members have heard any of these works in this set and what they think of them? :) .
The only one I've heard before (I think!) is Ligeti's Artikulation which I like and find amusing - look forward to getting this one when I'm able to afford it!  :D .

The Osteroratorium yes, for the Magnificat I would opt for Herreweghe as well - his 1st recording, of the BWV 243 version, not the 2nd of BWV 243a. René Jacobs is too much to bear for me in the Kuijken...and Herreweghe is just perfect.

I have both recordings by Herreweghe.  They are excellent.

If you want Herreweghe's Easter Oratorio, maybe you could consider the newly repackaged set and to get some wonderful bonus:  :)

btw I've placed my order for the set quoted above.  Thanks to Que, Jens and Antoine for the advise, and especially thanks to Antoine for pointing out that box set.  FYI they're replacing heavily scratched K. Richter cds that I had to throw out.  If I had a time machine I would go back six years and strangle my grad student self for treating my cds so poorly!

I'll order that other cd once I've made up my mind on cd vs mp3 purchase.

Thanks!  Looks like Herreweghe is indeed the winner to buy. :)

Try Googling "vainberg symphony cello".

Anyone familiar with these?

I prefer the Prazak and Artis String Quartets in the Zemlinsky Quartets... but the LaSalle (org. issued on DG) are also very good and this Brilliant bargain is a very good introduction if you don't already have other versions of these worthy works.

Lethevich

The LaSalles seem to feel less confident with the music than their Schoenberg, but I still value that set - I'd place it about equal with the Chandos cycle (the only other complete one I have heard).

The huge bonus in the LaSalle box is their recording of Apostel's 1st - a very fine 12 tone work in the Schoenberg, and specifically Berg tradition (what little one there was).

That might be one that I'll have to get at some stage because I have enjoyed Zemlinsky's orchestral music such as the Lyric Symphony & also the Symphonic Songs for baritone and orchestra. I recently purchased the LaSalle Quartet's recordings, also on Brilliant, of the Beethoven late quartets, and they have been a joy...

I'm actually currently looking at some Haydn sets, in particular, from Bernstein and Harnoncourt. Anybody heard these?

Speaking of Harnoncourt, who I generally enjoy, I need to break out the Beethoven 14-CD set and give it a whirl. Also his sets of Schumann and Schubert as well.

Lethevich

The forum ate my post ;_:

It is probably a minority opinion, but I found the Bernstein to be pretty horrible - I found the symphonies wanting in every element: verve, spirit, clarity, wit, etc. It wasn't even that heavy, it just churned along in a somewhat humdrum fashion. The Harnoncourt recordings are great as usual, although I suppose it depends how many other recordings you have: his performances are always interesting but too personal to be definitive, they tend to show their value most when contrasted with others equally good performances in a different interpretation.

I have my eye on that Mozart Kuijken/Devos set on jpc.de because even with the shipping it's still a bargain.
So are there any other recordings I should look out for on jpc.de to make the most out of the shipping?

I've found the Harnoncourt set of Mozart's sacred music and I'm also tempted by a certain PI set of Mozart PCs.

Seven or eight volumes of Trio 1790's Haydn trios, from CPO, at 2.99 Euros each!  :o And if you're into those sort of things, Ablitzer's Buxtehude organ music (comes with Que's seal of approval).

That Harnoncourt/Mozart is a great set, and the last time I saw it at Amazon it was like $175... :-\
