I have my eye on that Mozart Kuijken/Devos set on jpc.de because even with the shipping it's still a bargain.
So are there any other recordings I should look out for on jpc.de to make the most out of the shipping?

I've found the Harnoncourt set of Mozart's sacred music and I'm also tempted by a certain PI set of Mozart PCs.

Some suggestions:

Bach - Walcha: http://www.jpc.de/jpcng/classic/detail/-/art/Johann-Sebastian-Bach-Orgelwerke-Ges-Aufn/hnum/6348063 (mono, although incredible sound quality for the age, mandatory for every Bachian)

Clementi: http://www.jpc.de/jpcng/classic/detail/-/art/Muzio-Clementi-Klaviersonaten/hnum/2288329 (the most beautiful sound and performance imaginable)

Haydn: http://www.jpc.de/jpcng/home/search?fastsearch=piano%20trios%201790%20haydn%20cpo&rubric=classic&pd_orderby=score

Bach - Stockmeier (no-nonsense performance, gorgeous neo-Baroque organs):

http://www.jpc.de/jpcng/classic/detail/-/art/Johann-Sebastian-Bach-Das-Orgelwerk-2/hnum/1159215

Shostakovich - Kitajenko: http://www.jpc.de/jpcng/classic/detail/-/art/Dimitri-Schostakowitsch-Symphonien-Nr-1-15/hnum/5849111

Shostakovich - Janssons: http://www.jpc.de/jpcng/classic/detail/-/art/Dimitri-Schostakowitsch-Symphonien-Nr-1-15/hnum/5908441

Buxtehude- Ulrik Spang-Hanssen: http://www.jpc.de/jpcng/classic/detail/-/art/Dieterich-Buxtehude-Orgelwerke/hnum/5573281

That Harnoncourt/Mozart is a great set, and the last time I saw it at Amazon it was like $175... :-\

8)

And that was when, 15 years ago? :P It's so much cheaper in the UK, er... Timbuktu. A recent re-release re-re-release at Presto is currently going for $65 (and will be cheaper still during their yearly (around Nov-Dec) Warner Classics boxes discount sale).

Thanks everyone I placed my order for

* that Harnoncourt Mozart sacred music set
* Kuijken/Devos Mozart VSs
* Bach organ works 1 and 2 of Stockmeier
* Sofronitski (sp?) Mozart PCs set because gosh darnit it's cheap enough and I just have to know how it stacks up compared to Immerseel

I was very close to ordering a Buxtehude organ set, but I said I think 20 cds of organ music is already enough.  I'll be interested to see how Stockmeier compares to the one in my brilliant set (I think it's Fagius).

Re: the complete sacred music with Harnoncourt from Warner, I just found this at the top banner of the GMG board (since I'm not using my home computer with Ad-block installed)

http://www.amazon.com/Complete-Sacred-Music-Various-Artists/dp/B004MKND6C?&camp=212361&creative=383841&linkCode=wss&tag=goodmusicguideco

Looks like a re-re-re-release. The first as a DAW box; then it came out again for the 250th anniversary in 2006. And as mentioned earlier, a release of the same box with the same cover as the anniversary box, and now this one with a dark, floral design.

Well, I've not posted here in a while, but last few days been perusing the May-June issues of Am Record Guide & Fanfare - more recordings that I expected peeked my interest; some would be replacements and others 'new' additions or supplements - a number of these do not seem available on Amazon USA and their prices are rather high!  :-\

But any comments would be appreciated by me and I assume others!   :)

I'll try to purchase this 2 disc set in the next fortnight. I haven't heard J. S. Bach's Mass in B minor in full ever, & I am slowly getting into these seminal choral/vocal works, so I figured it' about time:

J.S. BACH
Mass in B minor; Cantata BWV 56
Soloists/ASMF/Marriner
Eloquence

^ See if you can get it cheap at JB hifi.

That's exactly where I saw it while browsing yesterday (for $13 - these Eloquence 2 disc sets usually sell for $15, & I've even seen them in other stores for $20, so the JB price is a real bargain). I don't have the dough this week, but I'm planning on buying it next week...

Can't imagine the B-Minor Mass will not turn out to be one of the great musical joys in your life. But why this recording in particular?  Is it a price-thing?
It would be very near the bottom of my list (although that's based on the 'paper-form' in this case, not actual familiarity with the recording). Even if you wish to eschew HIP {in which case I'd recommend Van Veldhoven (WETA review, ionarts review w/Suzuki comparison) or Minkowski (WETA interview, review}, there's still Rilling, Richter, Muenchinger and the like...

Yes, basically a price issue (I'm on a tight budget). But it's also attractive to me as it is coupled with one of J.S.'s cantatas, none of which I have on disc, so I thought why not kill a few birds with the one stone?

Well I think that the ASMF under Marriner back in his prime were a pretty formidable force (but I am aware that other recorded versions since then have surpassed earlier recordings of this oft-recorded work). I'm just trying to familiarise myself with key works like this, so I'm happy with basically any reasonably good recording I can get at a good price. I'm generally not that fussy about the way things are interpreted, I'm a lay listener, I kind of leave the finer points to the musicians. But if I do get "fussy" about performances, it's more likely to be regarding chamber ensembles or pianists rather than choirs, orchestras or conductors...

A scholary, robust and unmannered interpretation, generally a little earthbound. Only in a few of the allemande´s and sarabande´s there is a hint of poetry. Not my first choice, but I much prefer it to e.g. Carole Cerasi´s show-off rendering. Recorded sound satisfying. Close but not too close miking.

If you find Robert Simpson's quartets too dry, these may appeal slightly more. They are similarly cerebral, but more along the lines of rhetorical/joyous dynamic shifts rather than the architectural quality of Simpson. Both cycles have a searching, inventive and well-considered quality to them that bear comparison IMO, but similarly both may simply be considered boring too ;)

Edit: wow what I posted before made no sense.

Hi Premont - well, I already own Alan Curtis & Christiane Jaccottet in these suites, so not sure that I need yet another harpsichord recording w/ these two excellent performances; your comments have swayed me away from a purchase, but who knows what the future will bring -  :D

Dave, I also have versions by Alan Curtis & Christiane Jaccottet plus another dozen recordings of these works performed on both piano and harpsichord - by Glenn Gould, Angela Hewitt, Andras Schiff, Peter Watchorn and a few others.  I also do not see any need to further augment my collection ...

Walcha: that's who you need. I think his English Suites are my favourite, by far.  And you need the pre war recording of Landowska playing the A minor.

Both very different from Alan Curtis, for sure.

You are well served by Curtis and Jaccottet, and Martynova does (IMO) not add enough important to these two to justify a purchase. I thought, that you also owned Watchorns recording. BTW as Mandryka writes, the one you need is Walcha, but it may be difficult to get hold of.
