Well I took in the recommendations I've got on the Faust thread I started, and this is what I ordered.

Good choices, Harry. I also have the Barenboim/Dante. If you enjoy the Dante Symphony, you should listen to the piano arrangement done by Liszt himself.

From Crotchet (MDT doesn't seem to carry Dutton).  Purchase based on the discussion in the Neglected Composers thread.  He better be a master, Bate.

I made the same mistake that you, few weeks ago I purchased the Mandelring set from Amazon, when I should order this one:

[asin]B004C4IK8O[/asin]

I already fixed my error.  :)

All those AoF are too many even to write some short words here. Be careful, that music is not a light snack.  :)

Anyway, I'm a bit surprised, you ordered the first version by Leonhardt and not his DHM set (available on AMP at reasonable price).

I seem to remember Jens liking the Mandelring set, and Arkiv has it on sale at the moment for about $5US less than anything on Amazon MP.   I wishlisted the Shostakovich Quartet set when you posted ordering them, but  decided to let you be the guinea pig hear what you thought about them before actually ordering it. Have you gotten it yet?  And it's about time the Emersons got some competition on my shelf--they're the only complete cycle I have, although there's bits and pieces from Juillard, Borodin (from their most recent recordings of the cycle, and apparently not their best), and the Jerusalem Quartet.

All those AoFs were sparked by relatively low prices on Amazon MP.  The Leonhardt (which was shipped within a couple of hours of my ordering last night! fastest yet on Amazon) cost a whole $12.52US, and one of the other sets (either the Fretwork or the Rogg, don't quite remember which) was $4.96 plus shipping.  I'll have to go back and investigate Amazon--I don't remember seeing the DHM recording.   I wishlisted several of the ones mentioned in the AoF  thread, except for the Gilbert--the cheapest copy on Amazon seems to be in the $50 range and I don't need it that badly.

I did like the Messori you suggested, btw.

I see someone else ordered from Arkiv 8)  I ordered the three of the ones you ordered, together with several others.  I didn't order the Manze because I already have it, plus a bunch more they were offering as part of the sale.  I've already listened to some of the English Chuch Music set, and it's excellent, and the Mozart sonatas will probably be played before I turn in for the night.  Right now I've got Jaap van Linden in the Bach Cello Suites on,  which was another item from that sale.

And to round things off, the Barshai Mahler 9 Sadko pointed out landed today (another Arkiv order, this time a back order)--perfectly acceptable, but won't be my favorite--the final movement is not slow enough for my taste (something like 21-21 minutes in length).

Well, they say Yates is one of the few conductors to truly master Bate. I hope you enjoy what he does with the baton!

Well, the Mandelring set is not really bad. It's just that they are a bit "emotionally light" for what I wait in Shostakovich. Anyway, I knew it because I had listened to several discs on NML, but I insisted, my bad. The Shostakovich Quartet set has not arrived yet, but I also heard it via NML and I know it's a great set. Previously to these orders I owned two complete sets (the Borodins and the Fitzwilliam String Quartet) and several single discs. So far my favorites are the Borodins (although this set just includes 13 SQs):

I'm sorry that my recommendation didn't lead to a better result for you. I always feel a bit guilty in such cases.

You shouldn't feel guilty--I knew going in that this was a faster paced version, and it works quite well when considered as a faster paced version.  It's merely that this is about the only symphony where I prefer a slow pace.

Yes, I like that Adagio to be played that way as well. Getting us closer and closer to death but at an excruciatingly slow tempo.

The cool thing about that disc is that each featured composer's works are equally interesting - the Chisholm was especially a really good discovery for me :) The Bate symphony is really impressive, though, and all of it recorded in great sound too - thank god for Dutton.

Universal seem to be dumping their remaining stock of Originals, and I guess that those who don't turn up as part of larger boxes will never be seen again (unless sold to Brilliant); so I bought these:

And added this:

I was going to say "you saved worst for last," but actually you have one more to buy: the late Yakov Kreizberg managed to record a Daphnis right before his death, with the Orchestre Philharmonique de Monte-Carlo on their brand-new house label. I've just received a copy for review, so far it seems quite nice.

I wasn't aware of this thanks for bringing it to my attention. I'll have to wait for it to be more widely distributed before I pull the trigger on it. My top three Daphnis et Chloe performances are (in no particular order): Dutoit/MSO, Boulez/BPO, and Martinon/Orchestre de Paris.

I haven't heard the other two, but Boulez/BPO is my current favorite by a huge margin (against limited knowledge of Kreizberg, plus Markl, Petitgirard, and Haitink/CSO).

One of the worst performed Daphnis et Chloe recordings is Rattle's on EMI. Horrible. The flutist goes for an extended solo in the famous "sunrise" scene. I'm not sure why Rattle allowed this to happen, but there it is.

Just placed my last order for this weekend with JPC.  The order consists of the following CD's/CD sets ...

Pieter Hellendaal was a Dutch composer who performed with Handel and I have been looking to add more of his works to my collection.  The Leonhardt set should complement the Sony set well.  While I already have most of Andras Schiff's Bach keyboard works except the WTC and French Suites, it just makes economic sense to get this German set since it is still cheaper than getting the missing individual titles ...
