Well, there's that new Koechlin release scheduled for 29 December 2011.

Huh? ??? Don't toy with me, Karl, please don't toy with me. :D

Edit: I have on good authority, the person who runs the Koechlin composer website and the Facebook page who has connections with Hanssler, that the new Holliger/Stuttgart Radio Symphony recording will be released sometime in 2012. The recording will feature some of Koechlin's orchestrations and several of his own compositions.

Just ordered this :) :

Excellent purchase! And if you should be bitten by the Gothic bug, there are two other recordings available - the Boult (historic, on Testament) and the Brabbins (brandnew, on Hyperion)...

No, I really don't. My CDCDCD has gotten the better of me in the past few days. :)

Just landed:

I'm really looking forward to hearing these two. This Debussy work will be a first listen for me as I have only heard the orchestral excerpts from it. The Gothic will also be great to hear as I don't think the Marco Polo release did it full justice. One major gripe about the Marco Polo release of the Gothic is in the second part, the orchestra sounded too distant and recessed, hopefully Hyperion will remedy this issue.

Good luck with both recordings, John!

Thanks, Johan! I'll report back on the Brian thread as soon as I've had ample time to digest the Brabbins performance. I'll probably be listening to it several times in a row like I did the Marco Polo recording. Listening multiple times is almost a mandatory requirement for a work like this I think.

Naxos has released Novák's "Trio quasi una ballata Op. 27" played by Joachim Trio. I don't have that disc but it is interesting. There is piano trio music by Smetana and Suk too on that disc. I don't have anything by Novák but I would welcome better coverage of his music by Naxos and other labels.

Ah, did not know of this. Thanks. Shall go and take a look now.

No need to wait.  There are over 10 recordings currently available that are devoted to Novak.

What a massive number.... he deserves more.

Well, there's that new Koechlin release scheduled for 29 December 2011.

Just to be clear, John, the Naxos recording of Les heures persanes, with Ralph van Raat manning the piano, is scheduled for January 2! :)

Yes, I've seen this one. Honestly, I'm happy with Michael Korstick's performance, plus I'm not that much into solo piano music anyway. This is the only recording I own, and want, of it:

Thanks Johann I've been curious about this Symphony for ages - looking forward to it! :)

Another tough morning for the hardest working woman in the Bundespost. Especially hard today because it's snowing and for some reason she's hauling the mail on foot through the snowdrifts instead of driving her usual Post-yellow auto. From Amazon, JPC and market place sellers: the complete Haydn Trios from Trio 1790 (in a slim box with paper sleeves instead of CPO's more usual repackaging of the standard jewel cases); more Haydn symphonies from Kuijken; a couple of discs of Vanhal symphonies; Aho's Fourth; Casella's Third (MI's constant badgering finally did the trick  ;D ); and Barenboim's Bruckner (acquired primarily for Helgoland but I'm always in the mood for another "die Nullte").

That's the only one I have (of those you got today), but it is very good. The playing is incisive and crisp, and yet beautiful as well. Just listen to that first track and you will be hooked I think.
Be kind to your fellow posters!!

I'll listen to that right after I finish listening to a disc from the Trio 1790 box.

The Medtner is one of my personal favourites, and The Grieg box is not bad either. Many hours of happy listening. :)
