Sarge

Sarge correct me if I am wrong but wouldn't that be your first ever Ring cycle on DVD? I have the Levine Ring (I will forever be a boring traditionalist!) and I tell you the visual aspect of it all adds a whole new dimension to the experience.

I have received so much enjoyment from watching opera, it has enhanced my appreciation of so many operas (Verdi's Otello, Aida, Falstaff and Don Carlo were brought to life in ways CDs could never accomplish).  If you do find that you love to watch operas make sure you get Bohm's DVD movie recordings of Richard Strauss' Elektra and Salome with the VPO -> SUPERB!

  enjoy watching the Ring!

PS: I am glad I played a role in influencing you to purchase some Haydn Fischer symphony recordings!

It is my first. I saw Rheingold when it was originally broadcast on PBS in the States, and have seen excerpts from Walküre, so I know what I'm getting.

I have a few operas on VHS and DVD (e.g., the film version of Lady MacBeth of Mtsensk, Kleiber's Rosenkavalier, Maazel's Carmen, Bergman's Magic Flute). But I usually prefer the staging that goes on in my head when I listen to CDs  8)

I already own the Henze recording and it's quite good. I'm really interested in this Ruggles set. I remember looking online at the original LP set and drooling at the thought that it may one day be released.

Coincidentally just heard MTT and San Francisco do Sun-treader last night - powerful performance that had many cheering. Why this piece isn't more of a concert staple is a little mystifying.

I think you're right - still, a shame. It's a perfect program opener.

Listen what else the Cat Dragged In

L.v. Beethoven
Piano Sonatas
Claudio Arrau (1st cycle)
Decca (ex-Philips), 9 CDs

At last I've added Arrau I to my Beethoven. I've had a couple individual discs from it and was not particularly impressed back then... but did like his later cycle (generally considered a lesser effort). And a colleague absolutely loves the sound of it (he's got the LPs, admittedly.) So it had to be. This is the Italian, jewel-case-in-slip-case re-issue (Gran Concerto) which does not include the concertos or the Diabelli Variations as did the last, very nice, Philips edition. The new, super-budget "Collector's Edition" does, despite its name, include those performances, i think. That's the one the link goes to.

J.S. Bach
Goldberg Variations
Zhu Xiao-Mei

I'd been separated from my copy for too long, I needed my favorite G'berg Variations here, too. Voila. Aside, the recording, while still awaiting being 'newly re-released' in other countries, is available inexpensively in Germania. (Link here.

The Gustav Leonhardt Edition

Too many goodies in this box that I didn't already have... so it was presumably worth it. Better yet: the CDs come in sleeves that have the original art work on them and the necessary information on the back... so I can toss the box and sort them according to composer. That was actually the reason I finally got it, after all. :-)  It's an odd mix of stuff, though, and strangely (yet naturally) incomplete. A similar box that brings more of the DHM recordings together would be nice.

It contains:

Leonhardt's Third, 1976 Goldberg Variations
Masterpieces of French Harpsichord Music (Rameau, Le Roux, Royer, Duphly)
Georg Böhm: Keyboard Works - Ouverture, Suites, Capriccio
J.S.Bach: Organ Works Hagerbeer-Schnitger Organ, Alkmaar

Organ Works of the Renaissance and Baroque from Alpine Countries
Organ Works of the Renaissance and Baroque from the Netherlands
Elector-Princely Harpsichord Music from Dresden (Weckman & Froberger)
Music of Versailles (Marais, d'Anglebert, Forqueray

Telemann, Paris Quartets (1-6 only)
D. Scarlatti, Essercizi per gravicembalo (14 sonatas)
L. Couperin, Suites & Pavane
J.S.Bach, Concertos BWV 1060R, 1044, 1052

J. S. Bach - Cantatas Nos. 27, 34 & 41
Harpsichord Concertos J.S. & C.P.E. Bach
Corelli Sonatas (w/ Brüggen & Bylsma)

You must have the busiest - not to mention most athletic - cat on the planet.  ;D Seriously, I read more of your comments than I have time to respond. You make a fine case for many interesting recordings.

We're disappointingly badly served in terms of the Ring on DVD, but this is the one I turn to more than any other. Manfred Jung's Siegfried is verging on the intolerable, alas (purely a personal response), but Gwyneth Jones is utterly magnificent as Brunnhilde, in terms of appearance, acting, and oh, that voice. Irreplaceable. We've been dipping into it on successive evenings these last few days with enormous pleasure.

Now that is fabulous news all around.
