No contest: Bernstein. He had a real flair for the idiom. This is big band Haydn which is not a problem in the Paris and Londons (composed for the period's big bands).

But you might want to look beyond that. You want "clearer" recordings? Fey is outstanding in the Paris set; the wind and brass (period) detail striking:

My favorite set of Londons also offers those advantages (very aggressive, thrilling brass): Norrington in Stuttgart:

Minkowski's Londons are also worth thinking about

Sarge

Thank you so much for this Sarge. I was aware that you were collecting the Fey recordings. I am pleased that you liked them so much so as to recommend them. I believe Karl also recommended the Bernstein but cautioned me on the Karajan ( he had only heard his Mozart which he was not too thrilled about) I shall look into your suggestions.

I'll repeat what I suggested in the Haydn thread--check out Solti and Szell.

And of course, the Szell can be had for a song:

I join Jeffrey & the Sarge in commending the Szell.  And I am curious to check out the Solti . . . .

It's not at the same level as Hogwood and not as comprehensive,  either,  but it's a nicely done PI set;  certainly at that price I would have no qualms about getting it (although check out the CD version prices first to see how cheap they are;  I have it as part of a bigger set from Brilliant.)

I've heard good things about this 9th.  I already own Schubert 9ths by Harnoncourt (RCO), Giulini (CSO),  and Wand (BPO) that I really like.  Do I need another?

Hi folks, this is me asking about just one item instead of, say, ten or twelve:

[asin]B008K7X1EW[/asin]
Sabine Meyer: CLARINET CONCERTOS (EMI, 5cd)

I think someone here recommended this to me for the Weber, many months ago; but now I cannot find that reference.
Just curious if the performances are all-around highly recommended.  The Mozart music I know (622/297b), but the other four discs would be completely new to me (Stamitz, Krommer, Weber).

I don't know s..t about this, but I bought it anyway. So I set an example. Haven't listened to it though (it has been laying around for close to half a year), so it doesn't probably mattter anyway. Sigh.

My mental file cabinet has this in the "Nice but not Necessary"  drawer.  Well performed, but if you find something else calling you more strongly,  you won't be missing something that's unmissable.

The cover photo also makes me think of Steve Martin:

Is anyone familiar with these recordings? I almost got this used at a nearby store today: Levine conducting early Mozart symphonies.

I've heard some of these recordings. Her Mozart is not my cup of tea, personally. I do admire her Weber, as well as her Stamitz. I don't believe I've heard her Krommer.

I have the Krommer CD.  Very enjoyable music.  Lots of competition in the Mozart and Weber, of course.

I like everything I own by Orpheus, seems like a good price, favorable reviews.

I think I have one of those discs (Eine Kleine), and it is great. But I agree with you in that I like everything I have heard them play.
Be kind to your fellow posters!!

Browsing the upcoming releases section on a few sites yielded some potentially interesting piano releases coming out later this month and next month.

Any views on this?

How does it compare to other modern interpretations such as Freire/Chailly or Grimaud/Nelsons?
