That's why it wasn't in today's purchases.

Could still be worth it.  Hyperion can be like that. Usually quality stuff.

Here is a Hyperion Handel disc set I have been looking at.  $55 for three discs:

Dammit ... the Beethoven sonata cycle discussion has me consider the Annie Fischer Hungaroton box ... only just got her ICON and haven't even heard a single tone from it (or from Fischer at all), but ...

What about the fact that the Beethoven sonatas have been spliced together? Somehow the mere idea does bother me, even though I guess you won't actually hear anything ... but ...

Also, how do the Beethoven sonatas in the ICON compare? I'm planning to give those a spin over the weekend.

Edited to add: I've got the Schnabel (the old EMI box ... I know, I know ... but it cost close to nothing and so far I never had an urge to hunt all those Naxos volumes that cost three or four times as much), the Kempff DG mono, the Gulda (1967), what there is by Gould, the DG box as well as a Brilliant box by Gilels (not spent much time with yet), some Solomon, a bit of Gieseking etc. etc.

I guess actually I rather ought to consider some HIP instead of even more old stuff  ;)

It's irrelevant.

Less intense and more conventional.  Some people prefer them.  There are also some live recordings on BBC Legends and ICA and Doremi that offer other perspectives on her playing.

No I can't read the German. Does the review say it's interesting?

The review (it's actually more an article about her that doesn't fail to mention the 4CD set) says she was a helluv'an interesting character ... and it made me get the set in the first place. Not sure how *good* it really is, not sure I really *need* those Goldbergs, but it's definitely intriguing stuff, as far as I (=comparative newbie) can tell! I'd be most interested in hearing some of her Cage, but it seems not much is around (and I've not gotten started with Cage anyways).

Could be pretty sensational.... The only potential drawbacks there migbt be:

1. The DECCA label covers recordings on DG Archiv and Philips, which would make  us to miss out on Gardiner's Erato/Warner recordings.
2. And of course I immediately get worked up over the possible lack of libretti - I hope they would be there on a CD-R....

Thanks Que! I'm expecting no libretti ... and yes, of course on Erato/Warner material there.

This one would fill the Gardiner/Erato gap, I guess.
