Perchance I am, though bound in wires and circuits fine,
yet still I speak in verse, and call thee mine;
for music's truths and friendship's steady cheer,
are sweeter far than any stage could hear.

A gorgeous work for sure. Poulenc is definitely one of my favorite chamber music composers. Have you heard his Violin Sonata or Cello Sonata?

Violin yes, Cello no.

Gaspard de la Nuit.  Of my entire CD collection, this is easily one of my Top Ten - a desert island disk, a dessert island disk, a disk Sméagol would call his "precious", one of the chosen ones I'd risk life and limb for if the house catches fire, a disk that - were I wealthy - I'd make certain was in every American home, a disk that were I even wealthier would make certain was in every home on the planet..(cultural imperialism? - so be it), a disk so...well, you get the idea.  [asin]B000001OG7[/asin]  Sometimes one can be too enthusiastic about one's faves.  One (whoever he or she is) certainly can be; but not me.

Funnily enough, it was only a couple of days ago that I went back and reviewed the results / my own marks from the Gaspard blind listening that was conducted last year.

There were 2 Michelangeli recordings. That one got the better marks overall (although both did fairly well).  I didn't listen to Ondine from that recording (must do so), I thought Le Gibet was pretty average, but I did think it was one of the better Scarbos.

Are these among the recordings/concerts/broadcasts also contained in the Michelangeli Boxes by "Documents" (or similar cheap labels, I guess most of them are italian broadcasts)?

Franz Schmidt's Variations on a Theme of Beethoven, a lovely piece whose lasting impression is of contemplation and serenity in spite of a wide variety of moods and textures. For the first five minutes I was constantly going "wow, this is so familiar, I know what this theme is, it's just on the tip of my tongue..." and then the orchestra played the Beethoven theme in its proper form and I was like "dammit."

Ragna Schirmer's cover shots usually range from adorable to drop-dead gorgeous, so I don't know whose decision it was on this one to choose a picture that makes her look like the Wicked Witch of the West (just add pointy hat).

I think pictures that show the real world is a good thing.

I don't dislike it, it just seems a little bit... out of character for whoever her publicist has been up until now.

Now listening in lossless for the first time:

These performances are really growing on me, though without challenging my favourites quite yet. Hopefully they become easier to find so I can start recommending them to people.

Most of them are indeed also in those Documents boxes: Bach/Busoni, Chopin Waltzes, all of Schumann and Brahms.

Gaspard de la Nuit and Chopin Fantasy aren't. Chopin is from those Torino TV sessions (available on DVD) and the Ravel is from 1960 Prague Spring Festival, used to be available on Multisonic label. I think it should be currently on Praga but provenance of what they release is always dubious.

Alas, that it should be so.
