A debut CD from pianist I never heard of before but excerpts played on BBC3 sounded really interesting:

I thought so too. Here is my post about that disc.

Same here. Can't say I shared the BBC reviewer's enthusiasm for the Fliter disc, though.

February 2015 will see the completion of Alan Gilbert's NYPO Nielsen symphony cycle.

How's it been thus far?

Would not be surprised if he is credited in the notes. ;D
There will never be another era like the Golden Age of Hollywood.  We didn't know how to blow up buildings then so we had no choice but to tell great stories with great characters.-Ben Mankiewicz

Intriguing. And they sure saved money on artwork, using the same unremarkable photos for a third time now.

It would be nice if they re-issue some of their earlier mono sessions. The first Dorati/Minneapolis Nutcracker complete ballet would be a welcome inclusion.

Coming Feb. 10th:

Tracklisting:

Piston: The Incredible Flutist Suite
Antheil: Jazz Symphony
Copland: Symphony No. 3

Not a very creative program IMHO, but I definitely don't need this recording.

Never say never. Their last disc - Vaughan Williams' Fifth and the orchestral music from Peter Grimes - was really surprisingly good once you got past some wobbly Elgar. In fact, I'll listen again now.

Obviously in Piston and Copland they'll face stern competition from Lenny B.

Yeah. A regional orchestra getting a recording contract -- shades of Louisville! -- and they opt for oft recorded fare.  :( I might be interested if they were like BMOP of Botstein's American Orchestra and tried some of the worthy music lacking a decent recording. Mennin's Cello Concerto is crying out for a new recording for example. (Not to mention Henning's). It's not like they can really expect to compete with the big boys in something like the Copland.

Karl Henning

Well, and I mean to set to a Cello Concerto.

Why not? They competed with the big boys just fine in RVW. You should check out their last CD, which IS interestingly programed. Unanswered Question, Adams' Wound-Dresser, Britten's Sinfonia da Requiem, RVW 4th.

I don't suppose there are any people here interested in Nielsen and choral music 8)
