I gave my copy of Abbado's Brahms 4 a spin today, because of all the positive comments in this thread. I hadn't heard it in years. Blown away. I really have to get the rest of his cycle.

This is a very fine release!  Worth it if you can find it for a decent price (and even if you don't mind splurging either).   :)

Gordo recommended this to me a while back and it is excellent.

Also, consider these too:

Nice list overall!  ;)

I am considering two boxed sets by Jean Martinon. One covers his years with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, and one presents his lesser known time with the Orchestre des Concerts Lamoureux.

What are your thoughts? I have heard only his Saint-Saens symphonies for Erato and EMI.

I'd definitely grab the RCA box.

I do not have these but think him a splendid conductor. His Debussy and Ravel are the equal of any. He is pretty highly regarded on GMG in general.

His Saint Saens and Borodin are both excellent too.

The Martinon RCA set is of high interest to me. One of my favorite conductors.

This looks quite interesting to me. Music composed by Elgar, Kelly, Gurney, Parry, and Elkington from the time of the Great War.
Has anybody heard this disk?

I don't like this version of The Spirit of England as I prefer a soprano here. Outside of the Elgar, the best work here is Gurney's War Elegy. I do like Kelly's Elegy as well.

I listened to Kelly's Elegy on YouTube. It was indeed beautiful!

Fantastic. An excellent version of Spirit of England. You can find an older discussion about it here:

The rest of it is good too, with a couple real gems in addition to the Elgar.

Oh, thanks Neal! I clearly still have lots of pages to catch up with in the Elgar thread. Interesting to read your comparative impressions!
I listened to the Kelly piece on YouTube and was awed. Beautiful elegy!

Don't know the recording but everything I have heard on the label was poorly recorded. I suspect some were pirate live performances they were so bad. YMMV.

But this one looks like an original recording, not a pirate.

Brilliant Classics has been doing excellent work with the late Symphonies.

Veeery tempting indeed. I do need me some (a lot) more Langgaard. Of course, I only have one disc so far (Dausgaard's Sfærernes Musik)

I lucked into a symphony set free. He was clearly a man of immense talent. I find he didn't really achieve what he seems capable of, but he is very much worth checking out to form your own impression. He is definitely unusual.

It's been on my wishlist for a while now. It sounds great. But I have so many lieder/songs type releases that every time I come close to buying, I think to myself that I should really get to know the others better before I dive into this. So I hold off. But I am destined to get it eventually! :)
