I sampled those recordings and liked them quite a bit!  :)  They have a raw quality that brings power to the music.

Exactly what I think.

Very nice, Peter. Let me know what you think of those works. Stenhammar is one of my favorites.

Hat tip to Mandryka for this:

...and also ordered this other CD (so that the above wouldn't feel so lonely on the long trip across the Atlantic  :)

FWIW, not my favorite in the series.

>:( Damn! I was doubting between vol. 1 and 2, and it seems I made the wrong choice  :( . Well, I'll still get to know more of Wuorinen's music...

Not to rub it in, dear chap, but yes, all the works on Vol. 2 are strong!

Bought today at bargain-basement prices in a department store in Madrid (in a display that had an odd mixture of classical stuff from the defunct EMI label, some really bad 70s Spanish pop, Ray Connif albums, Aretha Franklin compliations of dubious provenance, etc.  ::) ):

The Strauss is a true treasure, possibly one of the best Metamorphosen on record.

Good to know, Jeffrey! I really got it for the Mahler, but perhaps it will also help me ingratiate myself with Metamorphosen, then? It's a piece I've never been able to warm to... :-[

I should mention Metamorphosen is an especial favorite of mine.

Speaking of M9, my copy of Ivan Fischer's new recording landed today. I think that is the 45th recording I own of the Ninth, including individual issues and performances included in sets.

Just downloaded this to supplement my reading of Jan Swafford's Brahms biography.

No Levine Mahler?

I'm actually working on a big Mahler order, Levine might be included. Stay tuned....

This is a very nice set - I think its a bit under-rated on the forum but its certainly very good I think.
Ill be interested to see what you make of the 3rd - I find the first movement a bit slow but YMMV.
I hope you enjoy this box.

yet still I speak in verse, and call thee mine;
for music's truths and friendship's steady cheer,
are sweeter far than any stage could hear.
