Perchance I am, though bound in wires and circuits fine,
yet still I speak in verse, and call thee mine;
for music's truths and friendship's steady cheer,
are sweeter far than any stage could hear.

"When Time hath gnawed our bones to dust, yet friendship's echo shall not rust"

In case you were wondering, this was my playing list from yesterday. I did not have the energy to write these reviews.

A fine Christmas CD.....

My ongoing journey through the SEON box, and until now it's been a good choice to get this box. I dread the Rene Jacobs discs though, were he unsuccessfully tries to imitate a countertenor.. they soon emerge I am afraid.

Well,  the first of the three he appears in is the worst:

So far I have found one dud in this box, a CD of Monteverdi madrigals that was plodding, and had Rene Jacobs as "altus"... but the principal blame must be shouldered by the man who conducted from the harpsichord:  Gustav Leonhardt!

There are two others interspersed in that batch,  in which Jacobs sings less and Leonhardt conducts better.  Still not great, but not as awful as that disc of madrigals. I don't remember a less pleasing performance of Monteverdi.... But you have heard more, so maybe it isn't the worst.  When you get to it, lie back and think of Holland, and it will be over soon enough.

And eventually you get to what I have playing now
F. Couperin
Concerts Noveaux 8 and 13/Apotheosis of Corelli
Kuijkens and others
CD 23 of the SEON box

There is a HM disc on which he sings together with Judith Nelson, she is good but he is awful. I broke that cd in 4 pieces and danced with vehemence on it.
I will have my finger on the skip button, wherever he appears.

Just checked the track listings.  He is in 10 out of 15.
When you do listen to the other 5, I will be interested to know if my criticism of Leonhardt on that CD is well founded.

The contemporaries of Mozart series turn out to be quite good, well apart from the sometimes sluggish tempos, but that is made good, by the fine musicianship of this ensemble.

Soli: Tasmin Waley-Cohen.  Solo violin works by Bartok, Benjamin, Penderecki, Carter and Kurtag.  I really enjoyed this artist's 1917 CD and like this one as well, though hearing solo violin for an hour straight gets to be maybe too much of a good thing for me.  She does a great job with the Bartok and I really enjoyed the Penderecki work 'Cadenza', which I had not heard before.

Last few days, some re-listening to recent purchases, i.e. the first two below - also just ordered the third CD shown based on some strong recommendations here - now, I'm really enjoying that Rebel disc (in part because of the performers & label!), but my only one - any other suggestions - Dave :)
