I liked it very well too, in the movie theatre, but the amount of recycling is a getting ridiculous.

That is hard to believe.

There are two more movies in this Hitchcock box which I have not yet seen:  Saboteur and Shadow of a Doubt.  Dang, but all this stuff has been good!

I think it would be a good idea to save the money and upgrade the wife's car - which, unlike Columbo's, is nothing special. It's just for transportation, you understand..

Stop saying such things! That set is too tempting already. This thread is getting dangerous.

(They are almost all good. Shadow was Hitchcock's favorite btw. Mine is Vertigo.)

I was enthralled from the first I saw Vertigo.

Viz. Rope, this is the Wikipedia article for the actual incident on which the source play was based.

I was lucky enough to see Vertigo projected the first time I saw it, when it was still embargoed.

TD Last Train From Gun Hill
A decent enough western with Kirk Douglas. An unusual premise, hunting down a rapist. A bit paint-by-the-numbers. Lousy score by Tiomkin.

TD Town Without Pity
A good drama also about a rape trial , with Kirk Douglas and a Tiomkin score, but this time a good one. Including the song.

Bogey

If you argued that Rope was Hitch's best, you would be on firm ground. I go Rear Window, but Rope would be in the conversation.

TD:

From 1930, Cagney's second film.  Even then, he steals the screen.  (This was on TCM and was chosen by guest programmer, Matthew Broderick.)

Also chosen:

This one was better than I thought it was going to be. Enjoyed it in its entirety.
There will never be another era like the Golden Age of Hollywood.  We didn't know how to blow up buildings then so we had no choice but to tell great stories with great characters.-Ben Mankiewicz

This one took a while to develop, but worth the wait.

Amen!

Shadow of a Doubt I recall watching for the first time in the 1950's with my father on a Saturday afternoon.  The scene in the library as Teresa Wright searches through newspapers for a certain article, and then finds it, sticks in one's mind for various reasons.

I'm quite surprised how much I ended up enjoying Rope. I had heard so little about the movie that I was expecting Plan 9 from Outer Space and what I got was Citizen Kane. These hidden gems are the best (your mileage may vary whether or not this counts as "hidden").

Yes:  so much of what I had heard or read about the movie tended to drive expectations down.

Yeah, you'll be so deep in a hole, you'll have reverse vertigo.

Having actually seen it, I really didn't like it all that much.

Maybe a second (or [n+1]th) viewing is in order. :)
I am not sure how much I liked it on my first viewing, but my appreciation certainly grew over the couple of times I saw it after that initial viewing.

Still great. Unless you are Alberich; then it sucks.

Farewell My Lovely renamed, because the studio thought the title might sound like a romantic comedy, considering Powell's previous career.

not very good product by three writers for a highly improbable heist movie like a cheap made-for-television one.
Japanese gambler villains, occasional nudity, axes to the forehead, the usual ingredients for this kind of film.
