Where do you guys find the nicknames of 98 and 99?
GMG has invented several nicknames for ourselves!

"The Stumbling Goat" (78) is another. A Lethevich coinage.

31 "Hornsignal"
83 "Hen"
99 "Cat"

I love 31! Especially Hogwood's recording with the harsh, braying horns.

I picked 31, 88, and 60. I also would add 46, 93, and some of the really early ones, too.
Beethoven's Op. 133 -- A fugue so bad that even Beethoven himself called it "Grosse".

Technically have not heard all of them - I have 3 box-sets of LP's and some others here and there on other CD's/albums.

Off the top:  104

Who voted for number 1?
Quote from: Wanderer on July 28, 2016, 12:27:07 AM
Every single one is a gem. For the needs of this poll I voted for:

1
94
104

1 is truly terrific - my favorite of the first ten (sorry, 6/7/8 trilogy) in its directness, simplicity, and "everything good about Haydn in a little bite-sized morsel" quality.

1 is excellent, and imo one of the strongest of the first 10, but for whatever reason I tend to listen to 9 more often.

I think 6/7/8 and as far as I recall also 3 are stronger than 1 (do not remember 9).
39 has two of the best outer movements of the egdy Sturm&Drang type but the andante is trite and disappointing, so for me this will always be slightly behind 44, 45 etc.
As 67 and 68 have been mentioned, I should probably revisit them (I have most of the 60s numbers as somewhat deservedly lesser known in mind).

I'm the only 39 voter??

You shouldn't be, it's a great piece, especially the first movement. That stinking poll starter screwed up the world when he didn't allow voting for all 106... >:(

I only know 23 of them, and it would still take me forever to figure out which ones to list as a top 3.

Yeah, I said "favorite", not "best". 67 is notable for two features - a witty col legno passage in the slow movement, and a bonus slow movement in the middle of the finale.

From the first ten, 1 and 5 make my list Top 31 list. I especially like Fischer's performance of No.1: perfect first movement tempo and great horns.

Well, John just can't make up his mind. With Haydn, though, even a Top 50 wouldn't begin to cover the favorites  ;)

Honestly, except for 82, I cannot remember any of them. So I have been listening to some of your favorites. No bad ones, but I have enjoyed 39 and 45 most of all so far. I accidentally listened to 'A' after listening to 39 and I really enjoyed that one too. I still have more to hear though, so I haven't gotten to everyone's favorites just yet...
Be kind to your fellow posters!!

I strongly suggest 52 being your favourite

This has inspired me to listen the 23 symphonies I own a recording of and try to pick the favourites.

I think I'll go by key...

See you back here in 23 days?

EDIT: Okay, so I can often manage a couple. See you in a couple of weeks.

1 is great! I think it might make a top 10 list for me. I also love 2 -- particularly the slow movement (which is a kind of slow perpetual-motion with constant 16th notes).

39 is great, too! I get the 1st movement stuck in my head out of the blue every so often. He used a major version of the opening melody in a surprise fast section of the slow movement of 79: https://youtu.be/YMRu3GK1_lc?t=856 (starting at 14:22).

I strongly agree, was just listening to The Hobbit Fey's version of this great symphony a few days ago.
