You are responsible for a lot of temptations! I should ban myself from reading your posts on this thread  ;)
The Bliss looks especially tempting as I like the John Blow work very much. The Antheil cover is terrific and I have collected the earlier releases in that series.

I agree about the Bliss - although I've enough versions of the John Blow - the interest for me is really just the "Mary Magdalene" work.  If I was a mezzo-soprano it would bug me a bit how Sarah Connolly (good though she is) gets to do EVERYTHING!  Its the aspect of Chandos' recording policy I like least - once they hit on an artist they become ubiquitous whether they are best suited to the repertoire in question or not.

Terterian's 1st & 2nd Symphonies must be not so good(!) - as its 3&4 which always get rolled out.  3 has to be one of the most extreme works in this kind of 'nationalist-realism' ever.  Curious to see how Bournemouth deal with it.....

I'm also interested in the Mary Magdalene work although I tend to prefer Bliss's orchestral and chamber works to the vocal ones I have heard. I did not think much of 'The Beatitudes' or 'The Enchantress' for example. Morning Heroes is an exception which I like very much.

He is renowned as film composer (not Yoko Kanno)

Here available with samples (IMHO neo-romantic recalls sometimes Yoshimatsu)

Thanks so much! I enjoyed the samples and agree with your Yoshimatsu comparison. Another interesting composer to explore. I see that Symphony No.1 is on CD but rather expensive. I expect that Relm1 might find this composer of interest as well.
Thanks again.

This was actually released in 2012.  :D

It's getting a fresh reissue.  The Sony boxes often come and go.

And they made a substantial change of the cover, substituting "and more" for the previous "etc."

The marketing folks put more thought into it this time.

for music's truths and friendship's steady cheer,
are sweeter far than any stage could hear.

I have the feeling Sony is mining their back catalogue for any possible profits. This set, for instance,  features two musicians whom I don't remember ever hearing about. (And I think if I ever heard a name such as Uto Ughi, I would remember it just because it' Uto Ughi.)

Yes.

Ughi has a reasonable discography and also teaches, including some high end artists like Sayaka Shoji, so I suspect he is pretty good.  It's not uncommon to find underappreciated talent squirreled away in some small country like Italy.

I am at least glad that Sony - with this and with the various "complete albums" boxes of American pianists - is mining their back catalogue for stuff that isn't reissued every 2 years. This is a deliberate side-eye at EMI/Warner, which is now reissuing slightly more attractive box sets of stuff that they issued as box sets in 2015, which they also issued as box sets in 2009, etc. etc. etc.

Edit to illustrate:

I have the first box, with the fancy red trim.  But ABQ is made complicated by the fact that they have done two cycles. I think the GROC issue is from the live cycle. The set with the four smiling heads next to it may be the full live set. But the reissues all seem to be the first studio cycle.

Well, it does mean that if you're not a fan of a particular cover art, you just wait until the next one comes around.

October 4: Edward Gardner doing Brahms symphonies 1 and 3 on Chandos:

[asin]B07WFJ9YSX[/asin]
QuoteFrom amazon: This first installment in a new Brahms series from Edward Gardner demonstrates the strength and suppleness of the Bergen String section, and outstanding ensemble playing across the orchestra. Chief Conductor of the Bergen Philharmonic since October 2015, Edward Gardner has led the orchestra on multiple international tours, including performances in Berlin, Munich and Amsterdam and at the BBC Proms and Edinburgh International Festival. Edward was recently appointed Principal Conductor Designate of the London Philharmonic Orchestra, with his tenure commencing in September 2021.
