The new erato

#50280
Played the string quartet last night:

[asin]B00L98UNKE[/asin]

Considering it is his best known chamber work, it didn't make as strong an impression on me as the other works on this set; i.e. the violin sonata, cello sonata, piano trio or wind quintet with piano, all of which I really liked.

Maybe I'm spoiled by the version by the Ysaye quartet which admittedly is better played.

Also, to continue the French theme, made the first inroads into the Lekeu set on Capriccio which I received yesterday.

This is absolutely one of the best recordings of the Akathist of the Mother of God, in the Syrian tradition. It will not get better as this. It belongs to my top list and is very much recommended.

Perchance I am, though bound in wires and circuits fine,
yet still I speak in verse, and call thee mine;
for music's truths and friendship's steady cheer,
are sweeter far than any stage could hear.

"When Time hath gnawed our bones to dust, yet friendship's echo shall not rust"

Sweelinck played on a Jan van Covelens organ built probably around 1521, a one manual instrument with only a 8' praestant, and a 16' Bourdon, but boy what a fine sound. Leon Berben at his best. Second rerun.

Gonna look at the Bonus DVD that comes with this (borrowed from my local public library, bless - this time - its peculiar collection development policy) : never seen before footage from the film,"Vlad the Impaler."

I came across this today: an excellent performance (from a concert?) of Schoenberg's Pelleas und Melisande with Alan Gilbert and the New York Philharmonic.

Available on YouTube also: a download on Amazon.

There we go. Corrected. ;) Also, wasn't Lekeu Belgian?

Quantz, Johann (1697-1773) - Flute Concertos & Sonatas w/ Benedek Csalog on a Baroque flute - now I already own a half dozen discs of this composer's flute works, including 4 w/ Mary Oleskiewicz (left a long post yesterday in the 'Old Instruments' thread, if interested) and really enjoy her performances (one of her CDs in my collection shown below).

So, I was surprised after reading a comparative review on Fanfare of this disc w/ the flutist shown in the first two covers below, and a preference of the reviewer - well, I decided to see if Spotify had these Benedek recordings for streaming and indeed each was available - now I'm not sure that these are preferable to those w/ Mary O. (and all of the sonatas are different) but the review is attached - Dave :)

On my own for a couple of days and this (new purchase) is part of what I'll be devoting my time to. I've only dipped into it, but I'm already leaning towards the playing on the longer pieces. Don't know why that might be, especially considering I don't really have anything else to compare it with.
"You overestimate my power of attraction," he told her. "No, I don't," she replied sharply, "and neither do you".

Bravo et hourra; the only thing as good as listening to Vieuxtemps is seeing young converts.

But only because of the interesting, indeed, compelling discussion of it on another thread : the Rach's third PC
