Nice purchases there, Geo Dude! :) The Debussy/Ravel and Villa-Lobos sets are awesome. The former is just one of those recordings that never grows old. Debussy and Ravel aren't acknowledged enough for their exquisite chamber music IMO. I couldn't image more magical performances of these works than those the indefatigable Nash Ensemble give them. I'm not familiar with the Shostakovich set, though.

Just bought:

This should keep me busy until the Henze DG set is released. I'm waiting on Amazon MP sellers to hopefully offer better prices than what's on Presto Classical, MDT, jpc, Arkivmusic, and all of the Amazon sites.

A couple of months ago, in the "Recordings You Want To See" thread, I said I wanted more CDs with Vera Beths as soloist. The filler on a Liszt disc is not exactly what I had in mind, but I bought it anyway. Perhaps not a bad thing as I don't think I had any late-period Liszt.

As I mentioned, if I could get at least $20 off the Henze DG box, I would buy and so I did:

Never bought from Amazon.de before, so I don't know of their reliability, but it was worth a shot. Anybody have any good experiences with Amazon.de?

Just bought for $7 plus shipping:

Seemed like a good deal as this DVD goes for much higher directly from Amazon.

I've used them, they're reliable, but shipping from the German Amazon is for some reason outrageously high, much higher than Amazon.uk.

In this way he had a chance to have the rhythm drilled into him. And this was the beginning of a musical inclination in his descendants. JS Bach

This may certainly be the case, but this set was cheaper on Amazon.de than Amazon.uk including the shipping. Go figure that one out? ???

On a trip to San Antonio today I decided to swing by a used book store that I've had good results with before; specifically I was looking for a disc of Villa-Lobos' works for solo guitar that I'd seen floating around there.  I found a goldmine.  The grand total was under $60:

Another buy from the Hyperion summer sale (= £ 20.16 for four discs, P&P included):

My shopping cart at Presto was filled up with operas and Karajan, but I wanted to wait for a new monthly cycle in my credit card.  Meanwhile,  they put Signum on sale and Stile Antico released a new one.  So gradually  the operas got shoved off one by one, and this emerged as what I actually ordered this morning.

Do you Know if this orchestra plays modern or period instruments? I have read some confuse information about it.  :)

I think modern instruments, but I bought a download without notes.

Good performances, but not so different from, or even better than (to my ears), Jarvi to warrant buying more of the same.

Thanks, it's what I thought. In that style, Vänskä and Jarvi are quite sure choices.  :)

I am glad. I trend towards a bias against (that felt rather push-me-pull-you, sure) antique woodwinds.

Great set, Gold Knight. Previn's 1st is still the performance to beat IMHO.
