Quote from: The new erato on December 13, 2022, 01:59:39 AMThe last disc with Tinctoris/Barbignant cost me NOK 204,32, equal to 19 Euros. Norwegian VAT included. + P+P which is rather negligible as part of a larger order.

Right, well the Dutch custom thought differently about this issue, and charged me a pretty hefty sum for imported goods from a non EU country. Presto reimbursed me of course, but the work I had to do for it, made me shy away from orders in England.
I've always had great respect for Paddington because he is amusingly English and a eccentric bear He is a great British institution and emits great wisdom with every growl. Of course I have Paddington at home, he is a member of the family, sure he is from the moment he was born. We have adopted him.

Florestan

My first encounter with Alfven's music and boy, is it good! This is a magical score whose infallible melodic verve and colorful orchestration really blew me away.
"Great music is that which penetrates the ear with facility and leaves the memory with difficulty. Magical music never leaves the memory." — Thomas Beecham

No such arrangement for Holland?:

"As of 1st January 2021, all prices (including postage) offered to our Norwegian customers now include Norwegian tax at 25%. Our VOEC number will be printed on all packages and you will no longer have to pay the taxes and clearance fees to the delivery agent when receiving your parcels from us."

Quote from: The new erato on December 13, 2022, 01:23:27 AMI think I got it from presto at the equivalent of 20 Euros, including Norwegian VAT.

Thnx! I'll check Presto.

Yep. With this EU tax collecting arrangement it should now be safe to order from them, Harry?

Okay, I will certainly try again, after this confirmation.

Edit.
I looked at the prices of Beauty Farm, they are even higher as with JPC. Still if there is something worthwhile in the price brackets I will certainly try to order again, hopefully hassle free!

I wish Amazon UK, would come up with the same arrangement, for buying English films or series has proven to be near impossible from the Amazon NL. Germany is a disaster in that respect also.

Well it seems there is, why it went so horribly wrong in my case is a riddle.

Local customs may not be familiar with VOEC numbers, I had a couple of problems which smoothed out after a complaint, but everything now runs smoothly.

Eurodisc don't have such an arrangement, I had a chat with them and they explained that volumes to Norway were so low that the implementation cost was not worthwhile. Neither has jpc, but that is not a problem for you.

Good point! Amazon UK is definitely behind the game..

Jean Sibelius.
Symphony No. 6.
Suite from Pelleas & Melisande, Incidental Music.
The Gothenburg SO, Neeme Jarvi.

I am running all the CD'S I have, in the Sibelius/Jarvi combination, for they were the first I bought from this composer, and for comparison reasons. Still like them very much, especially Jarvi's take on the this symphony. Intense and fast, first movement, he has a valid argument in all he does.
Good sound.

Haydn, Symphony No 2, Dennis Russell Davies

I've listened smatterings of this set before, but never went to the beginning. Turns out early Haydn symphonies are very engaging, a bit pre-classical with a bit of a J.C. Bach feel. And although minor key symphonies are rare, Haydn always includes substantial minor key passages in his major key symphonies.

What to say other than that this music is shared far too little here on the forum.

Carl Nielsen.
Complete Symphonies.
CD II.
No. 3&4.
Janacek Philharmonic Orchestra, Theodore Kuchar.

All in all this is a fine set, well performed and recorded. It can stand well next to other greats.

Good grief: Stunning. First-time listen: bowled over. What a lovely (American) composer.

Agreed! I'm listening now (YT) and enjoy greatly the huge, drifting quality of the melodies.

Quote from: Spotted Horses on December 11, 2022, 05:14:15 AMJanacek Piano Music, On an Overgrown Path, Sonata 1 X 1905, Thomas Ades

I find the sonata more engaging than On an Overgrown Path. Ades gives a compelling performance.

That sonata is certainly very striking...particularly when thinking about the events as they happened.  I'm checking out some tracks from this CD currently on youtube (right now, just listened to an excerpt from On an Overgrown Path).  Must admit, I love all of Janacek's piano music, but that's just me.  :)
