I have about 6,000 cd's and only 5 downloads; started buying them in the 1980's.  Now days I acquire much less; my haul in the past 12 months is no more than 30.

iTunes says I have 54 days, 22 hours, 58 minutes, and 38 seconds of music. But adding my new CDs, I have 55 days, 12 hours, 7 minutes, and 1 second of music!

This is probably the right way to size up the collection-- based on total running time.  But since most classical music collectors go by cds it's not really an issue. :)

Well, classical music CDs run an hour on average, so you have about 1300 CDs worth.

About 4000 items and there are some boxes...Probably invest in 200-250 items this year.

Around about 1000 (probably slightly less). My CD acquisition varies but for the last few years it's probably been around 50 - 60 pa. This year might be an exception as I've added a number of box sets to my collection.

I started collecting in 1988 so its about 47 CDs per year.

(each RING, for example has 12 to 18 CDs).

18 discs for a Ring cycle, Sarge?!   :o  Didn't realize Celibidache had conducted a Ring cycle.  :D

That seems like a fair way to me. Especially since I have a whole lot of CDs, maybe 3000, but I also have a lot of downloads.

I rip every disk I get so I can play it back on my different toys. I keep the flacs on an external drive, but I keep the MP3's on my main HDD. I divide them up rather roughly as Baroque, Classical, Romantic, 20th Century. I tell WinAMP to only scan one folder at a time. Right now it's my "Classical" folder. And there is 64 days, 18 hours, 39 minutes and 38 seconds in that folder. It's probably my biggest one, but Baroque and Romantic aren't too far behind. IIRC, the last time I had everything in the library, it was <>135 days. :)  So that's how long I'd last on the Desert Island (if there was electricity)  :D

It's the Moralt/Vienna Ring and actually it's not slow. They simply didn't fill up the discs: only 45 to 60 minutes per disc.

I started buying CDs in 1985; that averages out to...gasp, 242 a year.

I demand a recount!

Sarge

I think that is probably very close in volume, buying pattern and antiquity to what I have.

My start of purchasing CDs was the holiday season of 1984-5 after I bought my first CD player (for just under $500!) - so a quarter of a century of buying these silver platters!  My original 2 discs still play fine -  :D

Currently, I own about 1800 non-classical discs & just over 3000 classical CDs (that includes counting all discs in large boxes), so about 5K at the moment; now that does not include the likely 1000+ discs that I've sold or given away over the years (may be even more since I don't track these at all) - and still adding more!  ;D

Harry

At home I have about 6000 cd's all classical music and about 250 world music, in storage about 14.000 classical CD'S.
Every year I buy around 500 CD'S or more.

If I had to take a guess I would say I own around 7,000 classical recordings. I haven't counted them of course and I don't plan on it as the very thought would probably make me very depressed. :)

I'm not sure how many CDs I buy a year, but, then again, this has never been something I was too concerned about.

As far as other genres go, I probably own around 5,000-6,000 jazz CDs and about 2,000-4,000 in rock and other genres.

Sid

I own roughly about 300-400 cd's & a couple of LP's and tapes (don't have an ipod). Most of it is classical, the next biggest type of music is jazz. Over 90% of my classical cd's were bought since 2008. I am more of a concert goer rather than a collector. My spending on the former has increased, that of the latter has decreased over the last 12 months. When I first started collecting again just over two years ago, I mainly bought the budget labels, but now I'm getting into some more expensive labels. I'd say most of my classical collection is chamber and orchestral, followed by piano and a smattering of choral and organ (not much opera). Solo piano is now becoming my favourite genre, in the past few months I've collected virtually nothing but that. So my favourite genres (now) are probably chamber and solo piano & that's beginning to be reflected in my classical cd collection...

You're a millionaire, right? Are you the guy that made Facebook? Bill Gates? The Sultan of Brunai? 8)

I have about 400 classical discs after a cull last year of about 100. But I also have a few hundred downloads, probably 500 or so. Looking to be rid of another hundred discs this year too I think.

I pay a monthly subscription to Napster so I can almost all new releases on the major labels and a fair few of the smaller labels too. If I really like what I hear I will buy the disc. Previewing this way saves buying discs i'd be disappointed with so my collection should, happily, become more condensed.

Lol...I'm none of the above. I'm just an average guy with passion for classical music.

Easy answer is that he is simply as old as our ages combined.  You don't have to be a millionaire if you space it out. :)

I thought he was in our age bracket: the late twenteens.  ???

I will start a process of crediting my CDs to Kimi, maybe two CD every week. This way she'd be able to space out her classical music acquisitions reasonably. She should have about 2,000 when she starts college.
Do what I must do, and let what must happen happen.
