I generally like Tomasz Stanko, but Wislawa is one of his best in a long time.

This is good to hear, sanantonio. I felt the last effort, Dark Eyes, was a bit weak. My favorite Stanko album is still Suspended Night, but we'll see how this one stacks up against it.

Curious business. I was suddenly smitten by Tift Merritt a few weeks ago. I'd never heard of her, until I stumbled across the genre-crossing album Night, which she made with classical pianist Simone Dinnerstein. Just one song did it: 'Only in Songs'. Played it day after day. And since then I've been steadily accumulating albums. This happens to me so often, and I've never understood what triggers the phenomenon - it's like a set of dominoes falling.

I avoided Dylan's Self Portrait for 43 years. But after reading this Slate article

http://www.slate.com/articles/arts/culturebox/2013/08/bob_dylan_s_another_self_portrait_the_new_release_casts_light_on_dylan_s.html

I decided to give it, and Another Self Portrait, a chance. They arrived this morning.

the phone rings and somebody says,
"hey, they made a movie about
Mahler, you ought to go see it.
he was as f*cked-up as you are."

It does look cool...but it costs a fortune. So no, I got the 2-CD version. Comes with a nice booklet. Tons of pictures.

Currently awaiting a first listen, but high probability of success.  Apparently this is a music only edition of a previous release that contained artist conversations.

I am on the edge of getting this one, though I wonder if anyone who has the 2cd version has an opinion on how interesting is the extra disc of "session" false starts and discussion.  It might be fun hearing the masters hash things out, but I thought I'd get a second opinion before dishing out the additional ~$11.

Got a few by the man:

Louis Armstrong: PLAYS W.C. HANDY [Sony ~2008 edition with all the bonus tracks etc]

[asin]B0012GMYEG[/asin]
Louis Armstrong: SATCH PLAYS FATS [ditto]

[asin]B00187PN38[/asin]
Louis Armstrong: THE BIG BAND SIDES 1930-32 (JSP, 2CD)

A few discs of ~dub related music, two by Jamaican masters and one by two latter-day German disciples with (mostly?) Jamaican guest vocals.

Dadawah: PEACE & LOVE (Dug Out)

Keith Hudson: PLAYING IT COOL (Basic Replay)

At last, I found an original Japanese first pressing of Abbey Road that I could afford. A unique, and IMO the best, mastering. $140

Coolness on the Pops!

Thanks for your help with him; I think a couple more of your recs will be on the way soon, though I am still hemming/hawwing to get them on the cheap.

One more very recent purchase, a chunk of music I have gotten a lot of pleasure from but never owned.  This old 1989 set apparently has quite a bit more music than a much more recent "original album" style 5cd of (several of) the 60s Verve bossa records.  I tend to prefer albums to comps, but I think this one has what I need.
Amazon MP-USA dealer iDeals has been offering this old set for ~$15+shipping, on and off.
I was motivated to finally get this music when I dusted off my Joao Gilberto s/t "white" album and found it as perfect as I remember it.

And some sorely-needed remediation...

You are welcome!

As for Getz, he is one of my favorites.   Always liked his sound, as did Coltrane (Coltrane said of Getz "Let's face it, we'd all like to sound like that if we could".)  And the Bossa Nova is some of his best, IMO.

The new erato

Time to have this among my CDs (I have it on LP):

I was on a Zappa concert in 73 with the whole 13 piece band when this disc was quite new, and they played most of it.

I once saw Amiri Baraka and Evan Parker get into a kerfuffle over this point.  Baraka directly contradicted Coltrane's respect for Getz and said it was a media distortion, or some such thing; Parker said something to the effect that, "I've seen it in his handwriting!  I've seen the original documents at Darmstadt!"
I didn't know there were Coltrane archives at Darmstadt, that's intriguing.  Could I be misremembering the comment?  It was a roundtable in Atlanta, many years ago; I was very young.
