See very bottom of previous page for Barry Douglas Schubert tracklist. Boy, is it silly that they put the same picture on both the front and the back.

To be honest, I thought it was horrible.

Bjork writes her own songs for her voice as a reflection of her delicate and quirky personality. "All Is Full of Love" is a really good song when sung by her. Renee Fleming doesn't even come close to sounding like Bjork.  Renee Fleming sounds like someone singing Bjork in the shower.

I agree with you here. I thought Fleming did a terrible job as well. Bjork's music does not lend itself to vocals that are sung in a classical stylistic context. That's one thing I don't understand about Fleming in general. I think she's a fine soprano but when she tries to sing other genres of music, she completely loses me because she treats the vocals very much the same way she treats classical vocals or at least this is what I've encountered when she has strayed away from her 'home turf' so to speak. I really wish vocalists of her high caliber would stop trying to cross-over to other genres and just stick to what I believe they're actually good at.

The number of recordings of the Rosenkranz Sonatas has exploded over the last couple of years!  :o  :) And many by such outstanding Baroque violinists.

I see the need for a personal assessment of what is now out there that can possibly complement or even replace my Andrew Manze set, a violonist whose quirky style I'm generally not so keen on but he prooved to have a knack for Biber....

Q

PS Would be interested in your personal shortlist  :)

Tried listening to Renee Fleming performing "Joga", one of Bjork's finest songs in my opinion. Didn't hate it, but it didn't really convince me that it was worthwhile either. Despite the strings, it is too self-evidently a pop song, complete with beats.

Also... whoever at Amazon decided that "Guðmundsdóttir" is a surname needs to be slapped with an Icelandic clue stick. Having been in a couple of CD shops in Reykjavik, I can guarantee that this is not how it works.
Nobody has to apologise for using their brain.

It's hard to follow this ever growing discography. An old version? Music Antiqua Köln (still superb); one not so recent: Walter Reiter and Cordaria on Brilliant Classics, and a newcomer: Lina Thur Bonet and her Musica Alchemica on Pan Classics... Don't forget the Spaniards, they are doing some outstanding things the last years.  :)

Todd has some expertise here....

I generally liked Ruhadze and Co.'s performance in the Locatelli box, and the fact that this is a Rosenkrantz und andern sonaten set has some appeal.  The only Biber non-Rosary sonata CD I have is Holloway's recording on ECM.

So far I've only heard Rana in romantic repertoire (Chopin & Tchaikovsky) where she excels. VERY curious about her Bach...
Veit Bach-a baker who found his greatest pleasure in a little cittern which he took with him even into the mill and played while the grinding was going on. In this way he had a chance to have the rhythm drilled into him. And this was the beginning of a musical inclination in his descendants. JS Bach

Somehow the Gabetta and Ciani evaded prior detection; both have been out stateside since at least early last month.  I think I need to act quick on the Ciani, lest it disappear.  The Gabetta has another Elgar recording plus a Martinu.

I believe it's an original jackets repackaging of the Original Masters box devoted to him, but if it ends up being ten fully loaded discs, I'll buy without delay.

There are few more things they could add to the previous 5 CD set: Eroica with BPO, Wagner excerpts from Paris, Mozart 35th with VPO, and there was a live Bruckner 5th on DG which I guess could be added as well.

If the Eroica and Bruckner 5 are included, it will be hard to pass up.

I've only recently bought the other set ... hmmmpf. Sucks if I have to buy much of the same again, but I'm definitely interested in more Schuricht.
