Thanks.

If anyone is wondering where Sym #2 is, Sinclair hasn't done it yet. But there is a great recording with the late Ken Schermerhorn and his Nashville forces:

Before they go out of print, music by the two senior members of Spain's most distinguished musical dynasty, the Halffters (which also inlcludes Ernesto and Rodolfo's nephew Cristóbal--a superb composer--, and the latter's son Pedro--a prestigious conductor--):

Great! I'm not a big solo piano enthusiast, but there's some fine music in that set.

Love finding that series on vinyl when I come across them.  Great performances! Happy birthday!

My ears and my musical knowledge and my experience in choir singing and conducting tells me more as any semi intellectual discussion that goes on on the net, whether Schmelzer is right in his approach or not. My opinion is that he is. So with this I ordered the New release of Graindelavoix. :)

I've always had great respect for Paddington because he is amusingly English and a eccentric bear He is a great British institution and emits great wisdom with every growl. Of course I have Paddington at home, he is a member of the family, sure he is from the moment he was born. We have adopted him.

Yep...not easily available AFAIK. Bidù Sayão (a really extraordinary singer) came out of retirement to record this. She had earlier recorded a marvellous Bachianas Brasileiras nº 5 under the composer (Aria-Cantilena only, as the second movement, Dança-Martelo, had not yet been composed at the time IIRC).

This Floresta do Amazonas is derived from the music Villa-Lobos had composed for the film Green Mansions, directed by Mel Ferrer and starring Audrey Hepburn and Anthony Perkins. Green Mansions is one of the bizzarrest films ever--even if it was filmed in my home country, Venezuela  ;) ). I vaguely recall something of a bird-woman  ??? (Hepburn) showing up and then vanishing again into the jungle (over and over again). It was flop in its day, and the orchestral "reworking" isn't much better, I'm afraid (always IMHO, of course  ::)). But the work has its adherents, and was recorded in the 90s IIRC by a young Renée Fleming, no less.

I hope you enjoy it more than I did, John, and would love to read your impressions idf you care to share them...

Thanks for the info, Rafael. Of course, I've known Floresta do Amazonas for many years thanks to Alfred Heller's and John Neschling's wonderful recordings (haven't heard Svetlanov's yet). Renee Fleming recorded the work with Alfred Heller of course. Personally, I love the piece. It has that huge, sprawling sound to it that informs the best Villa-Lobos works IMHO. I think where Villa-Lobos starts losing some of his inspiration is whenever he's restricted to classical forms such as a symphony or concerto, but his SQs are, of course, quite lovely and worth getting to know. I'm a huge fan of VL and I've already posted probably way too much about him via his GMG composer thread. :)

I think of Floresta as one of Villa Lobos's best works

I actually have three CDs from the Hilliard set already, but the bargain price makes up for that.

Finally bought this CD (used). It's been on my wishlist since the day it was released.  :)

Spatial distortion is a serious problem deteriorating headphone listening.
Crossfeeders reduce spatial distortion and make the sound more natural
and less tiresome in headphone listening.

Thank you very much for posting this, being a big fan of Bidú Sayão and owning and and admiring her recording as a young woman (dare I say she not only sounded but also looked absolutely beautiful?  8)):
